reluctantly not recently.... I'm on my second one now, my first was a third generation (2003) I now have the latest one as the old one went through two batteries and then gave up the ghost.

Ahhh thank God for my misreading error haha! I guess it took me a little while to embrace it too, as I didnt want to buy my music online, and part of me always feared the more successful it became, the less physical music would actually be released. Although I notice every once and a while, digital only releases, after all this time, I haven't noticed a huge downturn in physical releases, and therefore, the iPod and I have made our peace, and I can continue to build my collection without fear.

I still buy the majority of my music on CD though and then load it onto the iPod. I only rally download tracks when I need them instantly for work. I'll be lucky if I spend ?50 a year on mp3 downloads... however my bill for CDs does't bare thinking about.... unfortunately digitising a paperback book isn't an option. Oh well!

Same here. This year so far I have spent ?3.70 on digital music, as luckily almost everything I have wanted has been free. The bill for the amount of music I buy is probably the one thing I had from the misses at least 75% of the time. Luckily, the collection is large enough, she doesn't notice when much gets added to it anymore. This week already I have bought 27 CDs, 16 Vinyl, and 2 cassettes. That's what I get I guess from living down the road from the worlds largest independent record store, with the largest second hand vinyl collection I have ever seen.

All my CDs get transferred straight onto the computer so I can stream at any point throughout the house however, when I can, I much prefer the joy of searching through for an album in the morning and listening from start to finish whilst read through the art work over breakfast.

I too have a “fetish” for books. I have stacks in several rooms and treat them with a weird reverence. I read books at a narrow angle as I hate breaking the backs of them, even mass printed paperback editions, I am OCD I know.

I also collect old books and have a considerable collection of Jane’s publications from WWI and WWII eras, a nerd with OCD I know.

The reason I mention these two things is so that you know I love the printed page but even I have just ordered a Kindle. I have been holding out for the Kindle Touch. I never got the old Kindle as I wanted the majority of the device to be the words/screen and the keyboard on the older model prevented this. The new “basic” Kindle that was recently made available here and in the US has no audio (only an issue if you listen to the odd Audible book whom are also now owned by Amazon), is awkward to enter text into if you need to use the search function or similar and is also the base level model, and that would never do!

I have ordered from the US the Kindle Touch Wifi with the advertising. By all reports the advertising is subtle and does not appear whilst you are reading a book, it pops up only when the machine is turned on or you are in the menu. Also the advertising laden version is $40 cheaper. I wanted 3G but do not really see the point as the browser on it is a last resort use thing anyway, limited by the grey scale screen. So for ?68 (including gift wrapping) I have a Kindle Touch on the way. Not only is it not yet available here, Amazon.co.uk do not offer the advertising subsidised options so it will be considerably more expensive when it is released.

There are many sources for books, as Dean suggested.

The Kindle fire (Blackberry Playbook hardware at heart) is a bargain at that price, Amazon lose money on each one hoping to make that revenue back through content sales. However, I have multiple pads of various sizes and versions already and learnt that only an e-ink screen is really any good for long term reading sessions.
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"
