+1 to that, not that I work in the IT industry...but cutterntly studying computing so I guess it qualifies. Collecting and somking cigars is going to be my way for having a relax at the end of a very stressful week with the other nerds/idiots in my class.

And beleive me there are a lot of those!

All in all it was about ?500 but it would probably be a good bit more when buying through normal channels.

Seeing as I noticed some computer geeks on here, I just ordered -

            Case: Xigmatek Asgard Case
Power Supply: Non-Modular 700W Power Supply (80 Plus Certified)
            Processor: Core i5 2500K 6MB Cache Socket 1155
CPU Cooler: Titan Fenrir EVO CPU Cooler
            Graphics Card 1: Radeon HD6870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
            Memory: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1866MHz C9 Dual Channel Memory Kit (2 x 4GB)
Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Pro Intel P67 (Socket 1155) Motherboard
Hard Disk Drive One: Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black 64MB Cache SATA III
Hard Disk Drive Hard Disk Drive Two: Samsung 2TB Spinpoint F3 EcoGreen 32MB Cache SATA II Hard Disk Drive
Optical Drive One: Blu-Ray Reader & DVD-RW Combo Drive

With the intention to ramp it up in the near future with a second of the same graphics card in crossfire and another 8GB of the vengeance RAM, didn't need any more hard drive space as I have an old NAS box with 3TB for general storage (hotswap with some other spare drives as well). Will pick a sound card when I've looked into them as well, nothing major but have some nice creative headset so would be a shame not to.

Comes ready overclocked so 3.7GHz rather than 3.3, which sounds nice

That sounds like some tasty bits and pieces. Take a look at some reviews of the Samsung vs WD hard drives, as far as I can recall, the F3s are right up there as some of the fastest mechanical drives around so it may be worth swapping them around and installing your OS on the F3 rather than the WD.

Of course you could always look at a 128 or 256GB SSD as a boot drive, especially now some of them are coming down to the 'magic' ?1 per GB level. I use a Crucial C300 128GB SSD for my C: drive and windows 7 boot goes from the blue welcome screen to desktop in about a second with a useable desktop about half a second after that.

Cheers Tzusskin, I was assuming the WD being Sata III and 64MB would be quicker than the Samsung Sata II 32MB? I'll see if I can find some comparison charts. And I was definitely thinking SSD for the boot drive in the future, just wasn't in budget with general storage being more useful initially, something like the Corsair Force series 3 120GB - most importantly these things estimated to last pretty well now too, 5yrs+...

Nice that the potential for upgrading is pretty much massive on this one, doubling up on RAM, graphics cards, ssd boot drive, sound card, etc... Loads of ways to blow my hard earned cash

On the subject of PC tech, anyone know anywhere in the UK with good quality yet reasonably priced watercooling tech?

I feel a build coming on but havn't done one for a couple of years now.

Are ATI / AMD still the best for GFX cards?

I buy all my kit from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produc...hp?groupid=962

They have a big range of watercooling equipment.

You are forgetting one of the main things with hard drives, data density. The F3s use higher capacity platters than the 1TB WD drives so the seek times are lower. Also a mechanical drive will never saturate the SATA II interface so the SATA III connection doesn't really do much extra at all. It makes a hell of a difference to SSD speds though as some of them are now reaching speeds of 550+ Mb/s as opposed to the high 80s for a decent mechanical drive.

If you are going to use an SSD be careful on setting it up, read a few guides on what to turn off in order to maximize its lifespan. www.bit-tech.net is an awesome source of pretty much anything tech, especially the higher end enthusiast level stuff, the forums are a goldmine and they have done plenty of hard drive and SSD reviews and comparisons.

As for the nerd comments, I resemble that remark...

I can honestly say I'm not forgetting that! Mainly because I never learnt it in the first place, so there nerrrr(d)
