Hi taking up Deano on his wonderful offer I present to you all the R&J Wide Churchill. Enjoy.
My mother in law landed at Xmas with a selection of Cubans from Beirut airport for me to sample, I had one wide Churchill a couple of weeks after they were unpacked and have since left them to settle. However I can tell you lifting this beast out of the obligatory box of ten is like lifting a munitions shell. Thick, heavy and solidly assembled with a light sponginess to the centre of the wide golden tan stick. It's 55 rg is quite a serious consideration when snipping the triple cap with my Xikar X8 but fell assuredly in one piece with few crumbs into my hand.
Pre-light draw tastes of milk chocolate and black tea. I roasted the foot with my cheap Chinese double jet butane lighter until the end is a solid red coal. The draw is superb as to be expected with a stick this wide producing tonnes of delicious sweet, mild earthy smoke.
The burn is dead straight the smoke abundantly fragrent filling the room with light tasty cuban aroma, that unique manly scent which has filled the halls of power for centuries, you know what I am talking about and are now reaching for a trusted stick right now. Of course I cannot stress how easily the smoke flows and how perfect the draw is with a stick of this dimension. Mid way a strange but pleasant ripe sensation hits my palette of figs and swiss chocolate; this cigar is seriously transforming into a medium heavy weight.
Last third the cigar is burning like a champ, offering really quite subtle sophisticated flavours with not so much nicotine around edges (to KO Berry1) but ironically the stick itself begins to soften under the bulk of its own dimensions. Right about here I'm thinking of Padron and other new-world manufacturers who've cracked this issue with a much tighter rolled larger ring smoke; take note Cuba, take note those hunting this years new thicker Cuban's. Alas this softness continues giving way to a slightly young, green soggy grassiness suggesting a slightly quicker ending to this delectable Cuban that I would have normally enjoyed. Ho hum.
Overall I honestly recommend the Wide Churchill its charming, bold yet gently sophisticated, meaty in size and smoke but light and complex in flavours and would give it a solid 90. I do think that with a couple of years in the Igloo it will transform into a seriously enjoyable smoke.
C/A light review.
