I've had a couple pre-embargos from 1956 from a small shop in South Carolina. Sometimes "pre-embargo" means that they just put a little filler in there that is actual cuban tobacco from 50 years ago. These, however, were full wrapper + binder + filler pre-embargo from a 50,000 pound stash that was legalized for use in 2003. I got so buzzed from them that I bought a bunch. I only have one left and found out during my last trip to SC that the entire lot of pre-embargo cigars has been sold out. People were buying thousands $ worth at a time they were so good. I'm afraid to smoke my last one! Good stuff.Business in the front. Party in the back.

I was scouting Ebay for cigar paraphernalia as I often do when I came across an aution for a box of RA SCC which the seller said was from the 1950s and was wrapped with an intact Cuban seal. Knowing how ebay always pull any auctions for Cuban cigars, I contacted the guy and offered him ?35. He got back to me within the hour saying it had indeed been pulled. He said he'd speak to some cigar sellers and let me know the next day if he'd accept my offer. He came back to me the following morning saying he had a price in mind and for me to make my best offer. I explained that I was taking a fair risk as the cigars were unlikely to be in a smokeable condition (he said they'd been stored in a cupboard) and that I might end up with a box of burst-open, split cigars and a decorative wooden box that had cost an arm and a leg! I offered him ?50 which I thought was fair considering the circumstances and he accepted.
One sleepless night later the box arrived at my work (I'd been watching the door for the postie for about 3 hours - every time the door to the shop went I stuck my head out to see if the postie had arrived!). Finally around 12:30, I had the parcel in my hands. It was with no small amount of trepidation that I unwrapped the parcel - had I wasted ?50 or was I onto something good? At first glance of the parcel I knew I had something here! Everything looked perfect... wrapped in tracing-paper material, MADE IN CUBA stamped on the bottom, the H&F box code in pencil on the bottom (August 1960!). THE INTACT PERFORATED CUBAN SEAL!!!!! Can you imagine the excitement of being the person to open the seal on this 48 year old box of cigars. I carefully slit it with a knife and opened........Every cigar bar one (which has a small split at the cap) looks like it could have come out of a 2008 box!! Although very slightly firm and very slightly dry they are in amazing shape and there's actually a lot of aroma left.
Time will tell if they'll be smokeable but to be honest I don't think I could ever bring myself to split the box..best to always wonder I think
Here's a few pics: I've included a few comparitive pics of a new box of RASCC and an old one . The interior of the old box is a lovely lemon yellow colour
ENJOY!
