  • Best place to buy cigars?

    Sirs,

I wanted to consult you all on where and why you would recommend your 'usual' place for purchasing your cigars. I have been a loyal C.Gars online customer of many years, and recently dropped by one of their Scottish shops, on the Royal Mile and cannot find praise high enough to represent the service, and the quality of their cigar selection. Does anyone else have any similarly highly recommended retailers? Perhaps a battle for cigar supremacy is in order?

    Best,

    PL

You'll find few bad words about Mitch and CGars on here (if, indeed, any) - but it sounds like you'd already expect that.

A couple of other places which we seem to hold in high regard too are:

Ajay's La Casa del Habano in Teddington (where we met up for a pre-Christmas herf). He's a very knowledgeable and friendly retailer with an truly remarkable Aladdin's Cave of cigars - so a great place to look if you're after something a little more unusual. He's got an online outlet too at HavaHavana, though I have to admit to not having used it (so can't comment on how it compares to buying from CGars online).

Davidoff's store on St James Street (on the corner of Jermyn Street) seems to be very popular, and is also home to a few more unusual finds. No online outlet though.

I'm a big fan of visiting JJ Fox when I'm in London, they have a website too, and I've found them to be extremely prompt with their deliveries, so fairly comparable to Mitch. That said, their website is still in the process of being built up, so there are some products which you still can't buy online. They do have an excellent range of non-Cubans if you're interested though - usually at the best prices you'll find.

Overall, for online sales, Mitch still holds the crown with CGars (for my money).

I couldn't find the C.Gars on the Royal Mile in October when I was there, and I looked. I saw two cigar shops, one called the Cigar Box and another was owned by an American, don't remember the name, but didn't get any cigars, I was hoping I could enjoy one in the store but no go in Scottland. I was in the Turmeaus (C.Gars) store in Liverpool a few days earlier and it was great. Very small (they are enlarging if they haven't by now) and the women there were very helpful. My favorite store though was in Dublin at James Fox across the street from the entrance of Trinity College near the Temple Bar area. Around the corner is the Morgan Hotel with one of the best smoking areas I've ever seen. Well heated and protected from the elements.

For UK then it has always been Mitch as top supplier for price and variety. If you fancy travelling abroad then Stagnetto in Gibraltar are also excellent. Happilly this time next week I will be smoking at their store

Well - there have been Turmeaus Tobacconist shops in Liverpool since 1874! we have been at 34 Fenwick street for the last few years but have just developed 32 Fenwick street into a specialist cigar shop and hope to open it at the end of the month. If the plans and visuals are anything to go by it should be chic as well as have a wonderful walk in humidor :-)

We are then redeveloping no 34 into a retro confectionery shop ....yummmmm

                            Cheers
