I know the Trinidad blend changed when they went into general production (as opposed to diplomatic gifts), I didn't realise that the gold banded Fundadores were a different blend. I've had a few and assumed the different taste was due to age.

Gold banded or the newer TTT band as far as I'm aware are the same blend in the fundadore, I believe the "diplomatic gifts" were a lanceros & we were told at the time it was the 'same' blend going to be used in production....
My old mate Fidel told me this himself.. honest!!!
BTW A colleague brought me back a box (coded JWL JUL 05) & said they were few & far between --- this box was sealed intact genuine etc. and had BOTH bands in it!!!

Little story about the undadores ... on being asked for the umpteenth million times in interview & not having actually smoked one Castro said "fuck the undadores -ask me something else!!"
Needless to say: "uck the" was left on the editing room floor! So another legend was born...
Does anyone on the forum think that the Trinidad robusto follows the same flavour profile as the fundadore vitola?
This is an odd question as you can't expect that two so different vitolas taste similar?
Take the Partagas D4 and the Partagas S?rie du Connaisseur No.1: the blend is probably similar, if not identical, but the smoking experience is totally different?
And yes, the pre-99 Fundadores were a different blend?

Flavour Profile is often quoted as an description irrespective of vitola & as for different blend can you show me your source as I think your wrong.

I have to agree with Smallclub - source - my experience. The vitola makes a huge difference to the taste of the smoke. The basic element of the profile will remain but everything else changes with different shapes/gauges/lengths.
Probably worth remembering the description is a marketing tool, the only truth is in ones pallet.
Examples:
Monte 4 and Monte 1, same blend but completely different experience.
Sig II and Sig IV - same again
Cohiba Lancero and Robusto - same again
...there are of course loads more.
Puffy, take a couple of 'same' blend different vitola sticks and let us know how they smoke to you.

Ta Monkey,
Believe it or not that's the reason I asked the question! I agree with your statement.
The Trinidad Ro bOOOst Oh has been described my James Suckling as having the same "Flavour Profile" as usual!
IMHO I think he's a sham & was just seeing who would bite after the plaudits given him on other threads!
As for Smalltub, it's the 1999 that I disagree with & was hoping for some facts rather than 'something I read in CA'.....
I agree with the 1999 thing from experience of smoking both. I also had it confirmed in a conversation with Simon Chase (who I believe was on the panel for designing the current Trinidad blend). I also believe both Jean and Magali at JJF have the same opinion about the change of blend around 99 on the Fundi's.
Don't let your pal JS influence your mind I am sure this is not all based on some dusty CA article.
In my experience the modern Trinis share a mild, creamy but subtly complex profile and this is common across the T, Extra, Reyes, Fundi and Reyes. The 98 Fundi's taste quite different to me, beyond just the age difference.

Ta monkey, my palette may not be that good
I've smoked fundadores from 98, 99, 02, 04 & 05 & haven't noticed any flavour or blend difference. They seemed to be (to me) to be the same taste as the earlier Laguito No 1's (although slightly fatter)from the mid to late 90's. The only real difference I have noticed, but quite hard to judge because of vitola sizes, came around 04,05 with the new size releases.
I would have said hand on heart this is when the blend was changed, trying to get my memory stirred but have a cat on my keyboard...
Better! Cat on floor!
I shall get a new cab & see if I can sit & smoke a range of dates + a '10 & get a more subjective view.
Regards,
Puff.
