I bought the Edmundo Dantes box in Mexico city and have always considered it to be Montecristo.
Made at H.Upmann for Max Gutmann, the MEX distributor and a great gentleman, but Montecristo.
My 2 cents.

From Suckling's cA blog :
I had a coffee with Miguel Brown, the manager of H. Upmann, and he said that they were very busy rolling regional cigars as well as the normal line, which looked like a lot of Cohiba Siglo VIs today. I think that Partagas rolls more regional cigars than Upmann but I may be wrong.
If you are not familiar with regional cigars, they are the ones that various agents have produced exclusively for their markets for one or two years. For instance, Mexico had the Edmundo Dantes Conde 109 last year and the United Kingdom had the Por Larra?ga Magnifico

Nothing except it does not have a Monte band, was not made in the Monte factory, does not taste like the Monte profile from many accounts and was not blended by Monte as far as anyone can say. What would I know? I'm just a backwoods roo packin crim from New Holland! LOL. (Thankyou El Cat)

Some of the best cigars I have smoked have not been so expensive at all. I have also paid good money for so called "quality smokes" which have not been to my liking, so I have to agree with you Jimneh regarding cost Vs taste.
It all comes down to personal preference."Keep your eyes peeled, your arse up, head down, and your ear to the gound" WHISKY77
