  • a good 'christmas' cigar????

    hey all,
i've been thinking about getting myself a box of cigars specifically for christmas!!! what would you recommend as a good 'christmas' cigar? i've got myself a decent collection of good, big cigars (such as the siglo6, sir winstons, ryj 1998 churchill, pl magnificos, cuaba salamones etc), so the usual suspects need not apply lol!!! i was thinking more along the lines of the RYJ duke el2009 or cuaba piramides el2008......... that kind of thing (NOT the monte sublimes el2008)!!!

any suggestions? btw, if anyone's had a duke recently, i'd really like to hear your thoughts........

btw........ i've 2 boxes of the partagas especial el2020 already, the trini el2010 is hilariously expensive and i'm really not too keen to splash out on the monte el2010 since i'm not particularly fond of that brand........

Eh? Not keen on the Monte Sublimes?!?! It's a work of art but hey, to each his own and all that jazz

See if you track down a Cohiba Sublimes.....they're an astounding smoke!!!

        hey stevie,
tbh, i've not had a monte sublime yet, i've missed out on the box splits on here, and there's been none in belfast for a few months....... when my interest was suitably raised enough to want to try one!!! i've heard too many things about inconsistency with the quality to want to go out and buy a box (knowing my luck, i'll get a duff box)!!!!

as for the cohiba sublime, do you expect me to dignify that with an answer? lol!!! but seriously........ i'm sure they're good and all, just too pricey!!!

        cheers all the same pal,

        alex

Not had the Cuaba (so this is a slightly unqualified answer), but love the 'Duke'.

It may be regarded as a bad habit, but when taking delivery of a box of cigars, I tend to always sample one pretty early on.
(Gives me a benchmark - useful in seeing how they develop with age)

The 'Duke' was a rare case - very good even when (clearly) too young.
Now that the worst of the 'sick period' is over, even better. YMMV though.

            Partag?s Salomones....Mmmmmmmmmmmm Yummy
            Snip------->

Exclusively aimed at La Casa del Habano stores worldwide, the Salomones. This size recreates the style that existed in the 19th century, when the Habanos - tapered at both ends - became fashionable.

Because of their complex manufacture, the double figurados are at the peak of the roller’s cigar-making art. If only for that reason, they deserve to be a part of the selection of every aficionado who prides himself of it.

Manufactured with the best leaves from the region of Vuelta Abajo in Cuba and submitted to a rigorous selection, the Partagas Salomones stand out for their excellent taste and full flavour, with an evolution and complexity in their smoking that will be enjoyed by Habanos lovers.

Presented in boxes of 10 units each and with the traditional full flavour of Partag?s, they are a very valuable option for the Habanos enthusiasts, who will find an attractive format in its 184 mm in the length and 57 ring gauge that will please the most demanding smokers. <-------Snip

Hey Alex if you are narrowing it down to the Duke and the Cuaba LE id personally choose the duke i have two boxes and they are excellent but having said that the cuaba LE is absolutely worth a try it has really turned itself good after a poor start why not try one of each say one for xmas day and one for new years day just my 2p.

Another thought how about a party LE 2000 i recently picked up a couple from our sponsers for a cracking price

Well doesn't just have to be just the one cigar lol. I would say the Monte sublime is possibly one of the best cigars i have ever had and i've nearly got through a box already. I also love the RyJ Duke and it is the best RyJ i have had so far however IMHO the Sublime is better. I'm not a big Monte fan as the brand doesn't grab me like Partagas or RyJ but the Sublime is in a different league i feel. Depending on what happens this Chrsitmas with the other half shift working i could sneak in one before lunch, one after lunch and one in the evening. Maybe see how the Siglo VI are ageing

Based on those that I've smoked (4 from 2 different boxes) I'd say it's the weakest, the most mediocre EL ever released.
Inconsistency with the quality? Probably, but I hate these underfilled rolls of bland volado leaves that remind me the first batch of Edmundos in 2004?

                        Well Small,
you must have bought fakes cos there's no way you could form that opinion from the real deals! It's one of THE greatest smokes ever....not just my opinion ask anyone!

I've had nearly 30 from three different boxes with different codes and they've all been phenomenal. I'm ranting I know but I LOVE this cigar

                        Laters mon ami!

Sorry for your loss as mine where bought from the LCDH in Gib, not under filled and all have been fantastic. Are you sure the ones you smoked are genuine? I can understand 1 or 2 being bad as they are hand made products but 4 from 2 different boxes sounds a bit fishy to me.

Mine were purchased from the LCDH in Gibraltar? and I know plenty of long time smokers who don't like them?
(for the record, I purchase all my ELs from 100% legit B&M shops)

If you know how the work is organized in the cuban factories, 4 bad cigars from 2 diff. boxes is not fishy at all. Half a day of rolling in adverse conditions for whatever reason or/and with a bad batch of seco or ligero leaves, etc., and we're talking of hundreds of bad boxes…

Anyone here remembers the first batch of Edmundos, back in 2004?
