  • Vegueros request

It crossed my mind the other night, after a conversation with Jimmeh, that one brand of Cuban that has never crossed my path (at least that I can recall) is Vegueros. I know this is a less common brand but I would like to give them a try. Few of the sources I know have any of them and I want to try two to four sticks from the range before even considering a larger purchase. The larger vitolas of the range appear to have stopped production this year so I am thinking now or never.

Can anybody assist by selling me three or four sticks please?

Why would anyone want to smoke Vegueros?

Well I have tried most everything else (that I can source/afford) and was told that this is the closest thing to what the Cubans would choose (not restricted) to smoke themselves. I know all the products we know and love are for export only and they have to smoke those things that Deano found while over there (jury still out on that cigar) but I refuse to say horrid things about something until I try it. I want to try one or two so I know for myself that they are bad or great or whatever.

        Greetings from Merida, Mx.

I must admit, these remain a mystery to me. We burned through several boxes of '98 #1 & #2. They were bland and possible overdue. recent re-visits to the marca have not brought any greater knowledge. Although they are purported to be a stronger marca, I saw no evidence of anything interesting in the blend to recommend.
This has long been rumoured to be on the chopping block, but it holds on every year. There must be a market for these somewhere, just not in my area.
I wish I had some singles left to send.
        Good luck with your search.
I look forward to one of your top-notch reviews.

        Cheers

These are a mystery to me as well. I have tried all the vitolas, young ones and aged ones. The aged ones tasted much better, but really, there are hundreds of better habanos for the same money?

As humans we love to have the choice, if the man chooses to smoke vegueros. Then let him smoke vegueros!

Tried the number one and found it to be quite greeen and grassy. Possible could have used a little longer in the humi....

I think that they have gotten a bad rap and people here the name Vegueros and the think cheep!!!
                Here is some info:
Vegueros is a post-revolution brand established in 1997.
It is a Habanos Local brand with a minor market share.
Comprises full strength cigars using tobacco from the premium Vuelta Abajo region.
I have sent out the Marevas (99) in blind tastings and nobody every have guessed what it was and they really liked them. This is the one in the reg production that I think is the best. I really think that is has a very unique taste and I think with 15 or 20 year on them and they are going the have a crazy weird taste!!! But the best ones are Cepo 49 x 141 (5.6") out of the 2003 - 135 Aniversario Humidor (all of the cigars from the humidor taste alot dif. then the reg. line!!!
The humidor "135th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Pinar del Rio City" possesses a special guarantee. Five of the best cultivators in Vueltabajo have signed this piece, they are
                Arejandro Robaina
                Rogelio Ortuzar
                Francisco Milian( Pancho Cuba)
                Leon( Chiquitico Vazquez)
                Salvador Carvajal

But surely all cuban brands (outside of short-filler JLPs & c.) use tobacco from the vuelta abajo?

In my opnion they're ok. Not to my taste and not seemingly to many people's. I've found them to have the unpalatable dryness of a Fonseca or Trinidad and a little Cohiba style grassiness, though it verges on green.

If anyone's heading to Spain they may be able to pick you up a few of the #1s or #2s on the cheap. I'm not out 'til next spring but if you're still looking for some then shoot me a pm around March...

I think I might have spotted them at one time in Miss Moran in Belfast here, not 100% certain, but just have a feeling.

I'll check for sure tomorrow or Friday (I'll be in the city centre one of the days) and if they do, I'll pick you up a couple.
