I got these in Havana last Friday. Not sure what year, probably 2022!
Juan Lopez Cincuenta y Cuatro. Really nice custom bands on these. I sent these pictures to some Spanish retailer friends of mine and they hadn't heard of them yet.
I had custom Punch bands designed for the Irish Regional. Luis Harguindey himself told me he loved them. But somewhere between Ireland, H&F and Habanos, the custom bands "weren't allowed" for our regional.

Indeed. Thanks again for the update. Those custom bands will double the price alone!

How's Cuba coping with the electricity troubles etc these days? The view I'm seeing swings between imminent catastrophe and BAU!

Here's a part of the presentation I made for Habanos with a mockup of the proposed band. I even found an old Punch band with the same colour green, so the Irish regional would have had a green white and gold band. Not too different from what the Italians got for their Punch Diademas Extra in 2009 (blue). Well received, but turned down in the end. I haven't found out yet by whom.

I got back on Tuesday. I had a busy 2 weeks out on what the Cuban Ministry for Agriculture are now calling "my farm" .
          A quick breakdown.

Power cuts for up to 4 hours per day in some parts of Havana. Longer blackouts rurally.
I was lucky, I stay in an apartment near the Nacional / Capri hotels and no blackouts at all. Friends four blocks away were getting some power cuts almost daily.
Havana is quieter, fewer tourists, less happiness on the streets but still fun to be had.
Quite a few new bars , restaurants, nightclubs filled with people who seem oblivious.
Bleco on the Malecon by Parque Maceo. DJ playing trance music while you eat, you could be in Barcelona, except smoking allowed anywhere.
Grados, brand new restaurant on Calle E between 23 and 25, Vedado. Very new but will be in the top 5 in Havana. Great chef and a 6-course tasing dinner for $26.
1ra y 70 nightclubs still going strong. Live music there last Tuesday night.
Sangri-La nightclub packed on Saturday night. Too busy so we went to Bar 23 on La Rampa, also packed as it was their 1 year anniversary but not so bad.
Not so much live music as before as many bands (salsa and reggaeton) have left for Florida. Havana d'Primera (Alexander Abreu) and Maykol Blanco still going strong in Havana.
Lots of little private businesses popping up. Much easier to buy water, beer, rum locally then before. Beers are cheap , 50c - $1 in little shops and some bars.
The cup seems to have stabilized to some degree against the dollar/euro at about 340:1. which is a good sign. To the point where I left some cup behind me with a friend, fairly confident it will have a similar value when I return.
Not too many cigars on the shelves. Some newer boxes of Diplomaticos Leales out. I managed to snag three more boxes.
Some good shop rolls in the shops. Some of the best cigars I had were $7 piramides I got in the El Faro cigar shop (by the lighthouse, very scenic). Osvany, the cigar roller there.
February will see the launch of the Behike 58, in a 4-pack gift box of 1 each of BHK2, BHK4, BHK6, BHK8
Behike 59 (Atabey) a 59 rg pyramid coming out in 2026, 60th anniversary of Cohiba.
The countryside has been basically cleared out of working age people. I need to hire 25 people, I'll have a hard time. I am proposing to build houses for them on the farm as encouragement.
The son of the Cuban ambassador to Ireland is looking for a job. I had a breakfast interview with him last week. I have no use for him at the moment, but two friends of mine there, one with a bar/restaurant and a tourism business, the other with a graphic design / web design business were willing to snap him up. He has two rare qualifications in Cuba at the moment, fluent English and a car. That's all he needs.
So things aren't all bad, as long as the power holds. That was a tough time for everyone. Many people lost water too as water needs pumps in most of Havana. You can live without power for a while, not so long without water.
I have never seen so many AMG mercedes as this time. There are class differences becoming more evident than before. This may cause its own issues. I don't know.

          Some Shots

Some of my coffee ready for export

More Coffee, drying after the washing process.

The washing process to separate the bean from the fruit. There is a system now to recycle 100% of the water.

Barista Caril in Bar 21 during a coffee tasting with some of my samples. That's just sample packaging not the final deal.

Barista and friend Lily in Cafe Tribe Caribe, very cool new cafe and private hotel in Centro Havana.

Managed to get model Rozy back to the hotel Nacional for some more promotional shots. When she walked on to that patio the place went silent. And she's lovely, no shite at all.

A real shame! That's an excellent band. Maybe the next one!

I'm nearly out of samples currently, but first shipments planned for December through February. I am lining up a UK distributor. Prices won't be outrageous.

Thanks for the info on Cuba, echoing others above, a great read and some fascinating insights. Please let us know how I can buy some of the coffee when it's available, read on FOH about this new venture and it definitely peaked my interest. Would love to buy some. Hope it all goes well.
