  • Partagas 898, A Love Letter

I recall that the first Cuban cigar to make me hungry for more of the same was a Partagas SD4; the complex spice, deep flavor, consistent draw, and fine construction made me salivate by simply thinking of it. I had gone on to put the SD4 down as a necessary component of any cigar collection, and after purchasing some Shorts, assumed Partagas as one of the master lines in puro craft.

Much later, I recieved a Lusitania in an excellent trade, and was duly excited; however, the Lusi was a bit of a disappointment given its relatively mild profile, though I've only had one and leave that book unfinished.

But then Big J got me excited about the 898's, and I figured maybe there was a new chapter to the Partagas story. After having a few of these long sticks, I think I can say without reservation that not only is there a new chapter, but I think we have on our hands the climax, if you will, of the Partagas storyline. The spicy Partagas flavor is, of course, back, but there is a heavenly depth of flavor that increases as you move, over the course of nearly two hours, to the nub with a sense of pure satisfaction and disappointment that the thing is nearly gone.

In other words, I believe that the 898 is one of the greatest smokes I've ever had, in my limited experience, and beats out the Short and the SD4 on all fronts. Big J and I have talked about this--why aren't there more raves for this cigar? Let me finish by saying that if you haven't had one yet, your life is incomplete.

Much obliged, DR, and I believe it is a Categorical Imperative that you obtain one forthwith!

Possibly because price aside. Partagas don't make life easy there being two 898s I think you're speaking about the Dalia .... but I'm not sure.

        8-9-8 Barnizados Dalia 170 x 43

        8-9-8 Sin Barnizar Corona Grande 155 x 42
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Maestro, once again your eloquence and wisdom shine a light of truth into the darkness of ignorance.
My congratulations on a fine post.

As usual, you provide a profound and erudite commentary, resplendent with typically precise observations.
          Bravo!

Now . . . if I may. . those of us still waiting to secure a box of these (discontinued) treats, respectfully request you (temporarily at least) 'pop-a-cork-in-it'!

I speak of the Dalia. I could be wrong, but isn't the Dalia the only one still in production?

Yes the Dalia is current. The Coronas Gorda was discontinued 2002.

Both a available from CGars. The Dalia called 'varnished' @ 13.99
              The Coronas Gorda called 'un-varnished' @ 12.49

              Confusing? .... just a bit!

                  898 one of my faves!

"A good Cuban cigar closes the door to the vulgarities of the world." Franz Liszt
"The most futile and disastrous day seems well spent when it is reviewed through the blue, fragrant smoke of a Havana Cigar." Evelyn Waugh

I've just brought back a box of 8-9-8 Unvarnished, 1997, from Gib. Never had them before - now a firm favourite!

Tipp, the 8-9-8 that Soulmanure is talking about is the 8-9-8 Varnish 170x43

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the 898's, Mackem.

I have smoked a few from '08 and '09 and they have been great so far.
