  • Cigar auctions - any experience of selling?

Having come to the realisation that I simply can't justifying smoking a stick that now costs £100+ I've been contemplating selling most of my cubans.

I'm looking at onlinecigarauctions.com (I believe run by CGars) - they have a sale coming up at the end of June.

Does anyone have any experience of selling via an online auction? Most of what I have are either limited editions or regional editions, purchased between 2011 - 2013

Haven’t had any experience selling at the auctions.

My understanding is the commercials really only stack up for the auction house or a long tail investor as buyer because the buyers comms are high (15-18% plus VAT) so they have to hold for a while to make a profit.

Sellers pay a fee of 15% plus VAT on the hammer price so if you sell something for £1000 you only get £820 in your pocket.

Why not list some of your goodies on the Forum if you have a price in mind? If it doesn’t sell to the fellas here you can always list on the auction after

Apart from the fact that I don't have enough posts to use the sales section, to be honest (although comission fees are high) I see it as the easiest option for me

Post a few more posts and try listing here, can always try auctions in the unlikely event they don't go. Good luck, I'll look out for posts

Sold some stuff via Cgars some years ago no issues if you are happy to pay the commission

Legit site, co-owned by JJ Fox owners.

Think they offer zero seller fees

Correct. BondRoberts currently has no seller fees.

I did look at Bond Roberts, but it seems that they operate an eBay style auction, where buyers are buying directly from the seller. As such, the seller is responsible for photographs and descriptions, and so I guess the seller's previous feedback would be an important aspect in building confidence in the authenticity and condition of the cigars being sold. As I haven't sold anything before I can see a lack of seller feedback might result in lower sale prices?

onlinecigarauctions.com operate slightly differently. The cigars are sent to them, and they inspect them prior to cataloguing them, noting any damage to single sticks etc. In my situation i.e. never having sold cigars before, that would probably be an advantage.

Comparing the sale prices realised on similar boxes across the two auctions it does seem that onlinecigarauctions.com realise higher sale prices, but there probably isn't much in it when you take off the seller's fees & VAT.

Anyway, the cigars have been sent in to Cgars and I received an email yesterday with a condition report, estimate of value and a suggested reserve price for each of the boxes. I've given the go-ahead and the cigars will be sold at their next auction on June 29th.

Suffice it to say that my humidor is not quite as full now as it was last week, but I've kept a few boxes back of my favourites so there is something special to smoke occasionally going forward

👍👍 - bear in mind that the estimates are often very conservative, so think positively 😎

Good luck with the auction, estimates are oftern widley underestimated these days. Just a point though, surely the VAT is only paid by the buyer?

There is no VAT on the sale price of the product itself as it is essentially a second hand product. However all auction houses charge VAT on buyers and sellers fees.
