  • Mystery Regarding Open J Cigars

    Hi

A short time ago I bought a box of Montecristo Open J cigars. There are a couple of puzzles regarding this purchase.

The box had a date stamp of 2010, it also had two makers seals one overlapping the other so both were visible. The H&F sticker on the lid is for 2020. The cigars themselves only have the Montecristo band and not the second Open band. They do look a bit older. They came from our sponsor.

Do I have 10 year old cigars?

Show us some pic's Dave, Monte Open's were never sold without a secondary band.

2010 would be about right for that cigar as they came out around then and I thought discontinued pretty fast (though not sure that was ever official)

      Should have both bands though

It looks like they initially came with just a Monte band then changed and added the OPEN second band

            Hi all

Many thanks for all your replies. I can confirm that the cigars do indeed have band C embossed.

My next question is now - is 10 years getting too old? I guess the simple answer is to try one, which I will. It's funny, I bought them with the plan of keeping for a while. I don't have many Cubans and I thought I'd be good with them.

I've been through 10 Open Masters from 2010 over the last couple of years. Nice tasting lighter cigars. When you try one, if you like it why not put them into your rota? If you have other stuff to smoke sure, leave these till you fancy one. How they will change over time, well you'll find out!

Being good to a cigar is putting it to the flame!!
              .--
I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

10 years I wouldn’t say is ever too old for a cigar provided you’ve kept them somewhere with controlled humidity whilst you’ve had them (the sponsor would have before that)

Agreed to a point. Some cigars inc some EL's have faded surprisingly early but of course the y are still smokable, just possibly passed their best. Of course some of us prefer a more mellow smoke anyway. As the Open is a light cigar, I imagine it light/lighter now but indeed, try with just a coffee, rather than a beer or spirit & get the most out of the flav.
