  • Fake Hoyo - please advise

Currently in Split, Croatia and went into the local (well reviewed and with a walk-in humidor) cigar store earlier today. Purchased a few Hoyos for the week including a No2, a San Juan and an Especial.

The Especial was very spongey, needed lighting every 5mins and had a really tough draw.

My main question is should all Hoyo bands be embossed around the dotted border and main lettering please as this one didn’t and smoked nothing compared to the one I purchased in the UK the other week.

I didn’t even finish it as got tired of lighting it all the time.

I was hoping to buy a few boxes over here but I’m two minds now.

If you can post some photos, that might assist a few folk on here confirming if they're fakes or not.

Also worth going back to the shop and letting the owner know about the issues. I'm sure he'd like to be given the chance to put things right, certainly if his reputation is on the line - No-one wants to be known for selling fakes!

      Here’s a snap.

Honestly, the one I had last weekend (from CGars) was one of the best I’ve ever smoked. It was a lot dryer though.

Sorry, was part way through editing my reply to you when you posted!

Edit no 2: and I seem to have deleted half my original post ,🤦‍♂️

Anyway, in short: hope you get it sorted!

Not an expert on Hoyo but to me the bands look real.

I've had the same issue with a super spongy box of Vigia, it canoed and smoked horrendously but I've just stuck them in the humidor and forgotten about them.

Looks genuine to me. Perhaps the cigar was over humidified?

As others have said it looks legit and sounds like it's just overhumidified. Can often get that in shops, especially if the temperature is high.
I usually don't smoke much that I've bought while I'm away for this reason. I take sticks to smoke, and bring back pirchases and let them sit in the humidor for a couple of months before digging in.

You never know with Cuba. One box is great, the other rubbish. The one from Cgars might have had some age on it and this one was fresh mayne5. Looks real enough for me.

Thanks for all the replies people. The canoeing and relighting sounds true.

I think it was just over humidified and it is 33degrees here at the moment. The other couple I bought I took straight out the bag when I got back to the hotel and put them in a Tupperware with a Boveda 69 and they feel a lot better.

Lesson learnt - bring sticks with me.

I would say almost certainly a humidification problem. I don't imagine Hoyo suffers too badly from counterfeiting either

That looks genuine to me. I think the cigars are over humidified. If I find I have spongy cigars, my first thought is always over-humidification. I tend to dry box such cigars even when they’ve been in the humidor for a while

I've usually found burn issues when it's rolled too tight or it tunnels when over humidified. Can't remember last time I had one canoe
