  • Looking ahead ? Montecarlo's

Well, September's here and whilst I wish it were the place I was thinking about for winter, it's the cigar.

Been through my short smokes. I reckon I've enough to last for a while, but was thinking of supplementing the tuppador with maybe one more box.

Robusto's I know are the generally preferred winter size smoke, but I don't get along with them all that well. (Especially PD4's, although I'm not giving up and will try them again sometime).

My preferred cigars are the longer Laguito sized types, but the downside of these is that they are best smoked during the Summer, generally taking around an hour or longer to finish, and which is far longer than I want to be spending on freezing cold nights, bundled up in an overcoat, freezing my balls off out in the conservatory.

Now, I've never tried one (as singles for some reason aren't easy to come by in the UK — CGARS, JJ's et al take note!) but plenty of BOTL on here praise up the PL Montecarlos. And at 6.2inches on a 33 gauge I was thinking that just might be OK as an additional Winter smoke.

Can anyone chip in with the smoke time on these .... and would they consider them a safe buy?

Shared a box of these with a fellow BOTL back late last year for the exact same reason...

IMO a very nice smoke with a woody, caramel, creamy flavour profile...

Used to last me anywhere between 40 to 50 mins...

Definitely worth a purchase and if your thinking multiple boxes of a box split then I'd definitely be interested...

    Hope this helps...

    Cheers, HabanoSy

My first took me about 70 minutes. I've only tried them young but they are REALLY nice. Better than the PC and Panetela IMO.

Lol. Parma Violets? Was you on something else too that night then Dave?

This cigar taste better when smoked slowly; if you rush a Montecarlo and get it hot, you ruin the experience?
I'd say 45 mn to 70mn? Below 40mn would be too fast?

_ A safe buy? Yes, even if not all boxes are created equal: there are boxes with slightly underfilled cigars, boxes with a few tight cigars, boxes with ugly wrappers, etc.

I've never met a habanos smoker that doesn't like them?

YES, yes, yes. Good when young, can be mind-blowingly excellent with just a few years. Rich sweet fruit combined with typical PL cream and honey. Like smoking some kind of delicious marmalade ice cream.

But not a safe choice. As SmallClub said they are often over or under filled, know your vendor and get them to give you the best.

In my experience- ugly wrappers not so much of a problem, but go for dark ones.

A real pain in the arse that H&F don't import the Montecarlos (indeed, anything other than the PCs, save for REs).

Interesting point Si. Why do you think that is?

I'd just imagined that the UK stockists had run out!

Same old story I would imagine...

Long-ish, thin cigars are unfashionable at the moment...

I guess H&F think, why bother...!?! (Wrongly I might add)

                  Only my opinion mind...

I guess you may well be right - on both counts. There is something very dandyish about a long, thin (elegant) cigar.

Yes, it's certainly not something I'd smoke at the pub! I did have one on the beach a month or so back though.
