CUBAN CIGAR WALK, LONDON - CITIES IN SOUND

A Leaf Brother friend, Nic Wing - met through this site and Facebook - has just launched a CUBAN CIGAR WALK in London.

This is essentially an audio-guided walk (sounds hired on mp3 player) through some of the key contemporary and historical cigar 'landmarks' in London.

I was lucky enough to listen to the commentary a couple of months ago when Nic was here in Deal, and we knocked off a couple of good cigars together.

I'm going up to London in a couple of weeks to meet up again, do the walk and smoke a blockbuster during it.

I found it fascinating as several of the sights I know and visit - JJ Fox, Davidoff - and other places I hadn't heard of.

If you like the style of Stephen McGinty in Churchill's Cigar, you will like this narration and tour because McGinty has been consulted during the walk's creation.

This is a walk I'm looking forward to doing hugely. It's an insightful commentary and will perfectly suit a civilised stogieman's stroll.

    Great stuff, Nic!

I had the pleasure of visiting London in 2001/2 (can't remember the exact date) and participated in a site-seeing walk with a small group. A perfect time to smoke Montecristo No. 4, I thought, which I had just purchased at JJ Fox. Unfortunately, as I was enjoying my newly purchased puro and the narration of our guide, a small lad ran by and smashed his hand into the foot of my cigar. The cigar was fine, but I'm afraid that the young lad burned the back of his hand. Well, that ended my plan to maximize the enjoyment of the walk with a fine puro.

What made the cigar special was that it was from a nicely crafted wooden box of ten, each sporting a second red band celebrating the Queen's Golden Jubliee. I still have one left which I keep as a momento. At Davidoff's I bought a Partagas Culebras, which remains in my humidor to this day. Finally, while in Paris on the same trip (sorry, but it was a package deal), I picked up a box of Siglo I, which I continued to enjoy for many years until the Secreto came along.

The next time I'm in London, I will have to set aside time to take the Cuban Cigar Walk.

Simon Chase of Cigar Magazine wrote a nice article on the origin of the Churchill cigar in his column "Our Man in Havana" in which he highlighs The Cuban Cigar Wark: London at the end of his article. I sounds like a great tour!

I must get back to London, soon! But first...Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

London Cigar Walk - Accompanied walk test - interested?

I'm doing the walk with Robusto to thank him for his help developing it but (once the date is fixed) I would be more than happy to include any others who would like to do the walk with us. I can promise you a warm welcome at all the stores on the walk.

I know it's a mid week date (it's half term so it works for some of us).

I am planning a 'test' accompanied walk on a Saturday when it's a little warmer, probably mid March. I will try to make this special with a couple of really nice little add ons that you wouldn't get if you did the walk on your own.

If you let me know if you are interested via this thread I will make sure I keep you up to date as it comes together.

I'd prefer Tue 17 Feb, but can make the Wednesday if that suits you better. If CoIV / Dale, or anyone else, is about on one of those days, I'll come up on either day to meet other forum Leaf Bros.

I would love to come on that walk mid MARCH for sure. I did have a listen to the clip on the website (City Audio Walks) it sounds very professional... and most of all interesting.

I will try to fix a date for a Saturday in March during this week and I will post details early next week.

                    Glad you liked the clips.

Any chance of us all meeting up in July?

Should give us all time to sort things out?

I'm always open to herf proposals, Dale. I can come if the band isn't playing. Or I can book out for a date in advance.

Remember I have six free weeks in Summer. Plenty of time for herfage.

Nic - I haven't listened to the radio clip yet.
Are you OK with the Tuesday?

The March date will just be for a test. If it goes well the proposal is to do it regularly every Saturday for a group of up to (say) 10 - 15 - limited by the capacity of the smaller stores.

I will be sure to keep updating this thread with news so check back.

There is also a Facebook page for the walk where I will post details.
                          Salut

awesome site. however i need to clear something up. i just finished reading a book about winston churchill. i thought the book mentions a tribute to him in austrila rather then one in london.

I can't believe that such a great walk exists - I was in London a few weeks ago....if only I'd known about it ARRGGHH. Serves me right for letting my membership of this site lapse
