  • R&J from cuba

Purchased some R&J from the factory when on holiday in Cuba last June put them in the humidor for a year and tried one tonight with a nice brandy.
Well the only way to describe them is HORRIBLE very very bitter hard to draw and would not stay alight.
So can any one tell me what is wrong with them they are corona in size, Waited a year to try my first R&J and very dissapointed

R&J have a huge range of cigars, can you be more specific with regard to what cigars you actually have??

Agreed more information would be helpful, type of cigar and details of how they were stored and humidified (RH%, device used etc). If they were hard to stay lit then maybe they were over humidified and too moist maybe.

        R&J No 1
Correct humidity and temp they did not appear to be to moist, as the Monte purcahsed at the same time are fine

Maybe just a bad one. I had a monte No 4 the other day and had a similar problem. They are handmade at the end of the day and it might have just been a bad one. Try another to see if it was just a one off. Try cutting it and taking a pre draw on it before you light it. If the draw is tight try another one until you find an okay one and smoke that.

A comparison may be an idea here. Taking the burn issues to the side for a moment, you say this is your 1st R&J. Perhaps you should buy a single of the same from a retailer in the UK and try that to see if there is a difference. As for the burn issues, sometimes bad boxes get through, as JJ said, they are handmade.

Kam, I've got some RyJ Bully's, (Robusto). They are not CC but Dominican versions as I bought them in the States. I'd be happy to swap one of yours for one of mine for me to try the Cuban's and you to try some that I find smoke well.

Where did you buy them exactly? Did you buy a box, or singles?
If they are singles, you probably bought fakes - the employees in the shops in Cuba often replace cigars from open boxes or petacas (cardboard packs) with street fakes?
I feel sorry for you mate?

there would be no comparison to a Cuban RyJ and a Dominican RyJ, not being facetious but it's like comparing Scotch whisky to Irish , both good but not the same

I think in Cuba you must buy directly from the factory shops or authorised dealers unless you are just after display cases lol. I'm getting into the habit of smoking one from every new box, partly because I can't wait and partly to see if I actually have got what I paid for. Sorry for your loss but buyer beware.

When in Cuba Kam only buy from the proper Habanos retailers, having said that I was there in June and bought knowingly some fake siglo VI i gave a couple a try and for what i paid they were good smokes, the guy i bought them from give me his story. We spent a day with him, he took us evrywhere in Havana and we all got wrecked, he give us his e-mail, so he was a genuine dodgey geezer . I have a genuine box of siglo VI and if the packaging on the fakes was a little better i may have been pushed to tell them apart straight away. Dont do anything hasty, give them a few months then check them out.
Hope you make the shooting herf.
