  • EL Mag 50 v Mag 50.

I recently smoked a 2008 Mag 50 which Kdot was good enough to supply me with at the 1st Official UKCF Grand Scottish Herf.

I had previously tried the Mag 50, but did not rate them, probably the cigars were too young at the time.

I finally managed to get a box of the original 2005 EL Magnum 50 a few months ago, and took delivery of a 2008 box of Mag 50 a couple of days ago.

For those of you who have smoked both, how do they compare against one another?

    I seem to remember....

    Hmmmmm?

I'm pretty sure I've smoked both...and I definitely have a box of the EL 05s in my humidor, which I simply love! They just get better and better with age!

Don't seem to remember much about the other.

Sorry for the lame response, but I thought someone should comment after 40+ views with zero responses.

Love the ELs - still got half a box of the 2005s. Only tried one of the production releases and it was very young and very forgettable. Wasn't inspired to buy a box, so will wait until my EL stocks run low ...

          IMO
The 2005's EL's are a far better Cigar than the now newer Magnum 50,
Even when they were fresh in 05 they were a more rounded, creamer flavour, with a slight hint of ntmeg, which had a long finish, and now with more age on them they are just wonderful
Nothing wrong with the New Mag 50 standard production 08's, but just not quite the same finish to them
          Just my 2p worth

I agree. The ELs were great when they came out and are at their peak right now. Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!

The standard production cannot be compared.

Difficult to contrast- whilst the cigars are the same brand and vitola the liga ( blend) and the vintage are different so the cigars are completely and utterly different in flavour and strength characteristic

                  was thinking........

though i've never had one, the 2005 EL magnum 50 would've been great because it would've had aged tobacco, as standard with all EL's!!! this would obviously give it unique smoking characteristics, especially in strength and flavour!!! also, it would be even better now it has 5 yrs on it!!!!

however, the now 'standard' magnum 50's (of which i've had a 10 box of) are smoking great, with no special aging process in the tobacco and with only 1 year's age on it!!!!

it kinda seems odd to me comparing the 2 when they're obviously both 'different' cigars, one's made with a special aging process, the other the normal rolling process !!!! it also speaks volumes for the h upmann brand when they made one of their EL's an standard vitola...... they obviously got something right!!!!

                  just a thought.......

I love the 50's and have smoked a good dozen or so in the last couple of months. Have another cab of 10 in my humi. Never had the EL though - will be keeping an eye out to see if I can find some. Considering I like the non EL, I must be missing a treat!

In my own opinion the EL Mag 50 r among one of the most impressive cigars I ever had, woody and very very nice flavour /smoke out of it.

Can't say it's number one as I still having my Cohiba sublime extra sitting at the humidor.

For those of you unable to afford, or source, a cab of the original EL Mag 50's Mitch of C.Gars has them for sale as singles at his new shop. I popped in today and grabbed one at twenty seven quid and change. I shall do my own little comparison and mention this so anybody else who wants to give them both a go can. It is a premium over the standard production stick I know. I hope that means the EL is something special because the standard Mag 50's I have had have been a bore.
