Maybe Habanos use the LE and RE system to test new vitolas etc as some of them appear later in the normal lines. They usually do have darker wrappers but I agree that the main idea is marketing and getting people to buy something they perceive as rare

I found this note from the recent Hunters and Frankau event at 10 Manc which explains I think:
Each year Habanos s.a. in Cuba releases a number of exceptional cigars known as Ediciones Limitadas or Limited Editions.
Since 2000 when the first series of four Limited Edition cigars was presented, a further three to five releases have been made annually, except in 2002. To date thirty-three different cigars have been produced that merit this sought-after title. The year of release is identified on a second band.
The characteristics of a Limited Edition are that:
- They are made by the most celebrated houses in Havana;
- in rare sizes;
- using dark coloured wrapper leaves;
- and using extra aged tobaccos.
Each cigar is made only during the year for which it is designated. The exact quantities made of each release is not declared because the Cuban industry cannot tell how many cigars of each size it will be able to make until the bales of specially aged wrapper leaves are opened and graded for colour.
Hope that helps.Nic

Very insightful Mr. Nicwing. I wish that the REs and LEs would be promoted with how long the tobacco is aged. I think that would be an important selling point.

I think they do on LE's? 2 years for wrappers (sometimes more) and fillers vary (but usually stated).
