Needing Some Sage Advice

Hey folks,
got one of those more agreeable quandaries to work through. Time to get some new cigars, but I'm having a hard time deciding. My experience is fairly limited, so I'm looking to expand and get a few more sticks in for the long haul (i.e., a box if possible).

Right now, I have a cabinet of Partagas Shorts, a box of Partagas D4, and a box of Montecristo Especiale no. 2.

In the past, I've really enjoyed the Montecristo 2's (though they have been hit and miss on quality) and Romeo and Julieta exhibicion 4. Generally, I like a spicy, strong cigar, and I salivate at the thought of a D4.

Here's my list of possibilities:
Juan Lopez Seleccion 2
Trinidad Robustos Extra
Partagas Series P2
Saint Luis Rey Regios
A Cohiba sampler (a straight up box of robustors or VI's is outa my price range)

Any input would be most groovy. Thanks in advance.

D4's are suppose to be strong,spicy. Haven't tried one yet. Don't count out the Cohiba robustos, I just pickedup a box of 25 for $285 not a bad price... Goodluckon your venture.

If you're new, I'd recommend the Cohiba sampler, especially if it includes the Esplendidos, Lanceros, Robusto, and Sig VI; within this set there is tremendous variety, and it will provide an excellent baseline for this amazing brand.

If you want to go with a single box, it's impossible to go wrong with the Trinidad Robusto T. They will smoke very well out of the box - especially if you like a spicy strong cigar - and age beautifully.

Finally, I'd sample the P2 as a single before you buy it. While they're a fine cigar, I find them overhyped, and perhaps a bit redundant to your fine box of D4's.

The JL S2 are strong enough and spicy. A rather inexpensive robusto.

The SLR Regios are a fantastic hermoso4. Softer and underspiced, yet the cuban odour is overwhelming.

Both need aging.

You say 'in general' you like the stronger more spicy cigar...

So whilst not trying to make your choice even harder...

Have you also considered the Boilvar Royal Corona, HdM Epicure No.2, Ramon Allones Specially Selected, Vegas Robaina Unicos...

Although the Cohibas are a bit more pricey they are 'more often then not' worth it...

The Trinidad Robusto T is the best robusto around IMHO, but it's NOT a spicy cigar… and it's price is an issue…

You already have some Partagas, then the P2 would be redundant;

The JL2 is very nice but I'm not sure it qualifies as a strong cigar;

I suggest RASS and SLR Serie A - both strong and spicy, in different ways…

(I have nothing against the Regios, but the Serie A is a better cigar, offering more focused flavors… IMHO)

You make some good points, and I realize that I meant the Trinidad Robusto Extra (I just edited that). The RASS is looking like a strong contender now.

I should add that I'm not completely against a less spicy cigar, and one might round out my collection.

I would say the RASS for sure, and as Habanosy stated earlier, the Bolivar RC age really nicely.

The RASS is starting to look like the favored contender. The reviews are generally quite excellent, but some note an acidic harshness underlying their strong flavors--anyone had this experience?

It helps...me to do more research! But that's a good thing--though the desire that the research creates is always at odds with the possibilities my wallet affords. I'll be checking these out today. Thanks for the tip!

That's the only trouble with loving cigars and making wish lists. I look at mine an' think the cost of this lot means I'm gonna be skinted for the next few years or so ..... but it's worth it. I think!

No there's some sage advice! In the end, I went with the RASS. Order is in, and now, to quote Tom Petty, "the waiting is the hardest part."
