  • Varying Wrapper Colour

I've just been through my cigars and happened to notice a quite distinct difference between two PLPC I have. (More obvious in real life than the picture)

The single I picked up on here and is from February 2017, and the rest are a 50 cab I have from September 2018.

I know obviously being a natural product, there are bound to be variations, and that the factories try to match the shades in a box. But these do look quite different. Is this just a natural difference between two crops/batches, or a conscious decision to change the wrapper leaf?

I suppose my main question is... Should I expect these to taste the same?

I remember seeing in a video there are something like 50 variations of wrapper colours and women are better at discerning these variations. That's a lot of browns.

I don't expect they tweak the blend year on year. Of expect them to taste similar. Of course there's the natural variation. And I think we're seeing these variations in these wrappers.

Like you say they colour match in a box. I guess they are also a bit less stringent with this vitola too.

I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

Annual crop variations at a guess. Same as a wine will taste / look slightly different each year even though the same grapes are used.

I was amazed when I read that they colour match the box first before they put the bands on.

In my experience PL seem to have the biggest variances in wrappers too, suspect it?s as it?s seen as a budget brand they?re less picky on what they?ll use for wrappers and willing to take more of a spread than other brands / factories

I was in La Corona factory beginning of 2018. Indeed mostly female are sorting per colour with effectively more than 50 different shades. At that time, they were selecting Talisman and Hoyo San Juan, which cannot be considered as low range cigars. The difference in wrapper colour on those 2 vitolas was also huge, so this really counts for almost all smokes.

Indeed. I keep reading that EMS is nothing more than colour selection!

Than must be why OP noticed the extra dark wrapper [emoji3166] It's just not cricket old boy! [emoji16][emoji39]

I've always wondered whether the EMS thing was still going, or whether it was a myth. But I prefer the darker wrapper tbh. And looking at pictures online, the majority of them do seem to show the lighter shade.

I'm just hoping I can get that sweet caramel flavour people talk about after a few years [emoji14]
