I sometimes do score when i smoke when i can remember. But its a simpler system, 90 means i'd buy a box and everything is +/- from there. A not nice tasting stick might be in the 70's.

Seems a good enough system to me Banos. I start with the premise a Monte No4 is an 80pts, (being that it was the biggest selling Habanos when I started), so it's how much better or worse the latest cigar is compared with the Monte No4. I can't say I'd rush out & buy a box of my high scoring smokes, often they are one off's, singles I have collected with a lot of age but I certainly am looking for a box of Trova & even the laFlordeCano ER 2016, if I can find them at a reasonable price.

You seem to smoke almost exclusively CCs? NCs not to your taste?

Also, do you make tasting notes for every cigar you smoke?

NC don't appear to be to Simon's taste at all.

See you've bashed a PSdC3 at rated 93 Si, no SdC1s yet?

Hi Arf, so good to hear from you. No, haven't tried your No1's yet but that was one of your PSdC3's. I smoked it in the main harbour square in Lisbon, on summer hols back in May. It was a stunning smoke & I noted in my diary I was still thinking about it 2 days later! Hope the rest of the 3's are as good. 20 of last years cigars were from your collection & everyone was tickety boo.

I confess to having a memory that thinks in pictures, and senses..s. so I have a pretty good grip of what each cigar I smoke is like... and it is pretty indelible. However I realise that my consumption is much lower than yours and suspect that without notes and scores I would be endlessly running in circles. I imagine that this gives you powerful insights into the development/ ageing potential of your very fine collection?

I am fascinated by scoring. I appreciate that we are exceptionally fortunate to enjoy a broad array of very fine products. So within a hundred scale... are there cigars out there that score sub 50/60 etc... or do we simply not want to know??!

Having a comprehensive set of notes helps over the years, just like my fishing diary, just a fine lines & you can recall not just the fish but the whole day. And whilst one tends to remember the best, the worst tend to fall from the memory. So to answer your question, are they cigars at the lower end of the scale- here are the not so nice Cubans on mine. I don't include NC's on this list but there are only a couple I have given 80pts+ to.

The Davidoff No1 was scored from smoking several but from a box that had dried out in someone's drawer in a centrally heated house. I took the box & tried to resuscitate them over 12 -18months but sadly they had truly died.

I can say I enjoyed these cigars down to 72pts, below that they were terrible. Just a reminder I include vale for money in my scoring system, hence the Monte Joyita's score low, not that they taste bad but the draws are frequently tight & they over priced IMHO & I know they are difficult to roll!
