Saint Luis Rey

I've got a Saint Luis Rey Petit Corona in my humi awaiting my attentions...bought it a few years back (believe it or not). Note, this is the Cuban version, not the machine-made German effort. From what I read, these are pretty highly rated, but I'm not aware of any mention of them on this forum.

Anyone got any views to share before I light it up...probably this coming weekend?

Serie's A (corona gordo) and Regios (hermoso 4) are highly recommended.
They are long time favorites of me and they are reasonably priced.
Its an underrated cigar brand.

Hi, just smoked the Saint Luis Rey petit corona.

Looked very nice, fairly dark wrapper and strong bouquet.

On lighting, the biggest impression I got was pretty strong tobacco flavour, with quite a lot of wood. As the smoke went on this continued to grow - until, as Did64 says in his post, it started to get a little bitter and tart on the tongue.

The draw was OK, though it did burn a little unevenly. Could have been the way I lit it up...it was a bit windy outside tonight!

Altogether, a strong, full-bodied smoke, tending to the bitter. The stick, although tubed, was about 5 years old, so could have been past its best. Not a terrible smoke, but not nearly as good as I had hoped.

Hi CohibaIV,

Only took it out of the tube recently, when I refreshed my humidor, which had been out of action for a few years. So, effectively, it had been in the tube until very recently. Having said that, it didn't affect the Upmann Junior, or the Montecristo Petit Tubos that had been similarly treated - they smoked pretty well.

Now my humidor has a new hydrating unit in it, I've taken the few tubes I have left and taken the cigars out...they include a Bolivar 3, R&J 2, and another Upman Junior.

Above all I hope it hasn't affected the R&J Churchill that I've had for the same time...I'm saving that for when my new son is born around Xmas time...

I just really think I a tube is a short term travel solution, and that the cigars should be out in the comfort of a good humi..

Saying that, don't forget not all Cubans age well and different brands have different aging times..

I agree about the tubes, and would normally have taken the cigars out to put in the humidor. A combination of things stopped that happening a few years ago, when I effectively stopped smoking cigars.

I'll see what the others smoke like ... and at least I now have some fresher ones courtesy of Monte to take the edge off any disappointment I may encounter.

Good to hear your thoughts on the SLR Petit Corona Wildwood, as I said I've never had much luck with them either.

On the issue of leaving cigars in tubes in your humidor; opinion tends to be divided. One the one hand the lack of air flow around the cigar is probably a good thing for long term ageing, on the other hand those little cedar sheets inside the tubes can lend the cigar a noticeable aromatic cedar flavour (in my experience), which may overpower some cigars. It's all a bit of a crapshoot really.

Hope it all goes well at christmas Wildwood, enjoy that RyJ Churchill- it might be the last bit of tranquility you have in a while

Never gotten on with SLR in any shape or form....I've tried DCs. churchills, Series A and a robusto (regios) and thought were at best ok. Maybe I had a bad year!?!?!

Saint luis Rey serie A and Regios are superb, IMHO. The PC will age slower in the tube, and is not at its best till min 5 years aging out of the tube, also bitter tannins would indicate more aging required (all as MRN's book!) bit late now but 10/12 years in the tube, or leave it out for a year, not tried these, so only what I've read. I have tried 15 year old SLR A's and these are very good......
