  • Box of 25 Montecristo no.1's 2016

    Afternoon Ladies and Gents,

I'm looking to become a long term member on these forums as i love to get into groups of people who share common interests.

I've been on the cigar scene for a couple of years now but i've only been buying singular cigars or small bundles and i've decided i'll take the big boy steps into buying a box.

A lad i work with went to Cuba last year and brought back a box of 25 Montecristo no.1's, box says March 2016 on bottom. He's offered me the box for ?350. The box still has a seal and has been stored, as i'm told, 'at the correct humidity and temp'.

I've seen older boxed go for ?450 on cigar sites but i've got no clue as to what the value of a pretty much brand new box would be.

My question to you all is what do you think this is worth assuming it is genuine (still waiting for box code so i can check it)? Am i getting a good deal or is this just OK value?
Do you think these cigars would rise in value if i leave the box sealed and keep it for, say, 5 years?

A huge thanks in advance- i'm looking forward to seeing what you all think, i love the economics surrounding cigars but i'm a MASSIVE noob to it all.

    Cheers,

    Chris

I would be very careful about buying these, I would get photos and check the various website in spotting fakes and also get information on where he bought them (if it involve relatives working in factories they're fake)

Worth about ?160.00 from Cuba, so he's trying to pull a fast one and make some money on a box of questionable source.

Kudos to you gents that was a fast response!

He said he got them from the airport 'official shop' in Cuba.

He's got an open box, which believe it or not, he keeps in a locker at work. I've looked at the band and looks correct - post 2013 where it has the gold center and side inserts.

Out of interest, what do you think they'd be worth in the UK?

I think i'll give this one a miss and wait a couple of years until i go to Cuba myself, or i'll bite the bullet with a different box of cigars from a trusted site like Cgars.

        Thanks again,

        Chris

If there's any doubt in your mind it isn't worth it. As mentioned above, a box of those sticks goes for about ?160 in Cuba, and maybe ?420 in the UK, from a verified H&F import

Personally, I'd pay the extra money for a UK box. Not only for peace of mind, but also to stop this guy being cheeky with the re-sale!

            Thanks Dave.

The ease of access to these cigars was making me want them but i think i'll just go for a box of sticks i really like - the H.Upmann Connoisseur A's.

At that price it's not worth it in my opinion. You'd be just as well jumping on a plane to Barcelona in the morning, picking one up and flying back in the evening. That probably wouldn't cost any more and you get to site see while you're there!

Of he's keeping the cigars in his locker at work...they aren't being stored properly imo.

                    I agree on that Sham.

I did allude to it in my earlier post but that's the opened box he has and they are dry and flaky.

He ensured me he's got the sealed box in his humidor at home...

Doesn't matter now though as i'm not going to buy them!

I'm a bit confussed by your questions, chico. If, as you say, you are new to puros and just getting into buying boxes, why would you be interested in the value of an unopened box in five years...especially since they are only 2016? Are you considering them as an investment? Planing to sell on this forum or just enjoy them?

But to answer one of your questions, in five years from now, they might be worth a few more pounds than the are now.

Why do I have a strong desire to pinch me nose on this one?

                        Proper Forum!

Oh...I almost forgot. Since you're new here and before you launch into questions about cigars a freind brought back from Cuba....how about making your 5th post an introduction on the newbie greets forum?

                          Hi Bag,

Firstly, i'll aim to make it my 6th post! If you're interested, take a look there in 10-15 minutes!

Also, i had a range of questions i thought would be great for you aficionados to answer.

I was going to buy the box to keep for a few years and enjoy myself once aged. The question about the value was just my curiosity more than anything.

Although i know the basics of ageing economics and that there is a market for ageing cigars, i was simply curious about a more accurate value. I'm a numbers person.
However, that market isn't for me as i can't really resist smoking sticks once i've got them...

Good to know, muchacho. I've been around these parts (in one form or another) for some time and have seen a thing or two regarding "knewbees" showing up with a box from Cuba. So, thanks for easing me pain.
