  • The Boli' Cave Gems Revealed!

ERDM PL's: Dear friends & members I have yet to meet, I haven't been posting many pics these days due to technical difficulties doing so from home but I can do so at work & here I am bobbing up & down on the North Sea, 120miles due East of Aberdeen; with a few minutes on of time until the next flight. I have just been posting about a box of '70's sealed cigars that I bought at auction & realised most of our current members wouldn't have seen the pics, when I made the original purchase 07/11 & that they may be interested to do so? Also I have a few interesting cigars I have been collecting over the years that may inspire others to look out for more unusual cigars than you can find in your local tobacconist or even the current stock of your nearest LCDH.
So I'll start the the fore-mentioned '70's gem as technically speaking they are no longer in the Cave, as I smoked the last one earlier this month at the Brussels LCDH, sharing the penultimate one with Mike Choi. As you can see when they arrived, they still had the glassine paper over the box & the box it's was sealed. I have video of me opening this & it was a bit of a tense moment but luckily, there were 25 perfect cigars inside. I haven't bought any sealed boxes since & if buying abroad or in Cuba, when they are sealed, I explain to the seller, I'll pay for them & then open them & if they aren't perfect I expect you to exchange them. On that basis I go ahead. Some collected prefer to buy sealed boxes, I can't imagine why? This was a one off gamble for me but I did make enquires with Mitch, who reassured me he had sold sealed boxes from this collector before & he hadn't had any complaints about them. So anticipating that most bidders wouldn't want to take the gamble I went for it. I should mention here for our less experienced members, all Habanos boxes sold in shops in the UK will have been opened on importing by Hunters & Frankau. That's how you know sealed boxes have been bought abroad.
So how did they smoke, well if I say it was like a perfect ERDM DT from '90 but twice as long, it would be close. Perfect with a grand bottle of champagne or a coffee & a Belgian beer.
http://www.cigarauctions.co.uk/mundo...s-p-10225.html NB: Auction's charges are added to the hammer price.

Just to mention hte herf in Brussels. I was Michael, the owner's birthday & I noted Mike Choi was travelling over on the Euro Star for the day to join Michael & friends. I sent a few pm's & caught the train from Antwerp to Brussels. That went fine but jumping in a taxi, the driver had never heard of the street! I changed cabs & eventually we found it. A very small fronted shop in the back street but with a small outdoor area which is a boon in warmer weather. Lunch was ordered, Rezza arrived driven by his driver so he could smoke & drink (they did give the driver a cigar with his coffee). And a splendid afternoon was shared. Mike really enjoyed the PL, as he does appreciate all sizes of cigars too.

Wonderful. I've bought a few lots from the Cgars auctions, but not yet sampled any of them.

I love the look, (and taste!) of skinny cigars. I know it's been said before, they look more sophisticated than a short fat cigar.

Can't disagree with you there Les but I guess they don't suit everybody. Some think them unmanly but every gentleman can handle a little elegance in his life.

Yes, I like a cervantes too, although they can have draw problems, they pack a lot of flav & sit easy in the hand.

Apologies, I lied I have actually bought three lots.

Firstly, two Montecristo A's in a presentation box. I bought one of these the first time I went to Havana and smoked it the night my son was born.

I have in mind that my son and I will smoke them when he is old enough to realise just what he and they mean to me. Only time will tell if they last that long in the humidor (the boy is only just five now).

Secondly I bought a box of Robaina Spanish RE which I have just had a peek in the box for the first time in a couple of years, they smell fantastic.

At the same auction I also bought a Partagas Festival bundle, these went straight into general smoking and everyone so far has been a delight. My discovery of the batch being the Lusitania so far.

Cheers Marc, I did, last two smoked last leave. I couldn't understand how I smoked them all so quickly (only 6yrs after all) & on re-reading my diary I discovered why. I had gone in to the sale with a sleeping partner. We agreed a top price & I attended the Auction & did the bidding. He ended up with 13 sticks & I got 12 & the box. So thanks to Bnelly, who was a member here for a while & Martyn will remember from our previous group - Club Havana.

No2: Party Charlottes 2001: Sorry got dragged away to unload catering stores. So for those not familiar with this vitola, they are twins with the Serie du Connaisseur Series No3 35 x 5 5/8 & like twins would say they were identical. One reason I think people report them tasting better than the No3, is that the Charlottes they have tried have probably been older than the No3's they have smoked. Both are now sadly deleted lines, the Charlottes in 2002 & the No3's in 2010. They only way to test this theory would be a blind tasting with a pair form the same year. Personally I'd go with the theory they are the same blend but perhaps pre- '98 there was a greater difference? Anyone tried some real vintage examples? The real difference in practical terms is that the Charlottes fetch a higher price in auction so some people must believe there is a difference but personally I would pay the extra markup that they seem to fetch on some sites.

I picked these up from Martyn at the Mill Hill GC Herf May '15 & a very reasonable price & could hardly wait to crack these open. I was wasn't even 18months when I found the perfect time, with the perfect partner, to try these distinguished smokes. I took the box down to the Cafe in Antwerp, as it's far more of an occasion presenting the first from a pristine box. No4 shows me savouring the aroma, No5 a pair picked out ready to be clipped & Laura Palmer giving her approval. No6 reaching for my cutter & lighter from my waistcoat pockets (as mentioned in another thread) And the last one is my chief smoking buddy in Antwerp, young Zowie; who's stag night will be held on my next leave & we will be cracking a couple more interesting boxes - which I will share with you all in due course. Please let us know if you have tried the Charlottes & if you enjoyed them? Anyone still got some stashed away?

No3: R&J TubosNo1 '75, picked up a box of 6, at the beginning of the summer. Unusually, the box is actually stamped with the date. Didn't wait too long before I had the opportunity to smoke one, on a fine afternoon at my local caf?. These were machine made so not the same as a vintage the hand made de Luxe would be but still a fine starter for the afternoon & taking time to appreciate smoking such an ancient if not venerable cigar. I was preparing for my GSE's in '75 & you?
