Storing cigars while in Cuba

Hey everyone. I'm a new member here so hope you don't mind me jumping straight in with a question

I'm off to Cuba for a couple of weeks in September. Three days in Havana at the start, then the rest of the holiday in Varadero. I'm looking to buy enough cigars to fully stock the humidor when I come home.

I would prefer to buy everything in Havana where there is a better selection. Also I want to avoid buying at the LCHD in Veradero where I understand the prices are usually marked up compared to the LCHDs in Havana.

So my question is how will my cigars keep for 10 days + travel out of a humidor environment? After a quick Google search I understand the humidity could be anything from 70-100% in September. I'm guessing the A/C is the hotel room wouldn't do them any good either.

Any advice would be welcome.

Very true!
Assuming you're buying boxes (if not a Xikar travel humidor is a wonderful thing), I'd really mostly worry about very high temperatures, in terms of humidity, and considering it's not that long, you should really be fine. Just remember to freeze everything once you get back, just in case.

Buy a Tupperware box and put it in your suitcase before you go, with a boveda pack. Assuming you will need that room for the cigar boxes when you come back.

Put the boxes in their whilst you move around and you will have 70% in there no worries. Could even put it in the fridge if too hot!

Only thing I would say is this... While in Havana, you can buy cigars for your stay, sample some you haven't tried before and then at the end, you can buy boxes of your favourites... However, if you know what you want and are happy to buy them at the start, go for it!!

Also, on the way out you can store things you won't bring back in the box, like toiletries and sun-cream! A heads up too, take paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin, any you don't use, give to locals, they really need it!

Take a roll of cling film, the day you leave, double wrap all the boxes so they can go strait into the freezer when you get home!

Outside the airport should be, not even much need for the boveda if for less than two weeks

Cuba LCDH are regulated prices, just variations of stock in different shops. Enjoy searching out those rare box's...

+1 on the ziploc bag. This is what I regularly use when taking sticks away from home. Emptied the sponge out of the humidifier and filled with Puck RH Beads.

First ... Although prices are set by the government ... At least two places I know of will upcharge if you don't insist on a " factura " ... And even if you do ask for a factura they will do their best to convince you that you don't need one ( then proceed to upcharge ( as much as 50$cuc per box ) on your purchase ) .

these two are in vara ... LCDH on 63rd is the worst and has been doing it the longest ... LCDT on 39th is just as bad only they haven't been doing it as long . Airport cigar store overcharges also just not quite as much .

as to storage while in Cuba ... I just put them on the floor in the closet ... Nothing more . Then just put em wherever you have room in your luggage ( it's only going to be for a few hrs ) .

i always put cigars in checked luggage never carry on ... But that's just me .

Hi Harran, I just wrapped my boxes in cling film & there were fine. It's a short stay & I don't expect you'll be buying them all on the first day. Don't worry about the temp! Would buy in Havana as better choice, the stocks the shops & LCDH's are getting outside of Havana is quite poor these days according to my friend who goes every year. And if you haven't done the freezing thing before search for threads on that, it sounds worrying but do it right & there'll be no problems & no future worries about illegal aliens that you might have imported!
