  • URGENT. Gentlemen please check your tins!

I always thought tins were relatively safe.

This this afternoon. Went into the Tup for a suitable smoke for a rain dodging afternoon, and was met by two holes I'm pretty sure weren't there last time. Each is about 1mm diameter and almost perfectly round. Fortunately it is a tin and I don't think anything can exit from it.

There were in fact three cigars in the tin and I smoked the one without a hole.

So what do I do now? I guess the tin has to be chucked, shame as I quite enjoyed the ones I did get to smoke.

What is more concerning is that I thought the Upmann HC tins were released after Cuba started freezing cigars before export, does this mean beetles are still a real threat in newer boxes??

No, I don't think so Sean .... but I do think anything in the middle of a stack might be better insulated and the freeze temperature there not be quite cold enough. The Upmann SC tin is quite a chunky little fella and that also might have something to do with it?

I hadn't thought of how chunky the tin is, but at the very least it shows we still need to be a little careful, even if its highly unlikely to be a problem

Sorry about those two by the way Arf

bad luck chap.... if something has eaten its way out, was there a grub to be found in the tin? or... could something have gotten in? and if so from where?

gutten for you as i've recently gotten a taste for those little upman halfs...

personally i'd disect squish bugs out of spite... and then burn the sticks to ensure i didnt accidentally transfer any bugs/ eggs

Bad luck. Out of interest, what kind of temperature were these stored at?

Temperature during the Summer is always a problem for me. I keep the tups in what I believe is the coolest part of the house, but depending on the day, temperatures can creep up. This morning as I type the reading is 63F, which will possibly rise towards midday.

I've had dozens of these tins now and they've been ok, touch wood! I had a similar beetle and matching hole in a tubos once.

Not nice! Any sign of the culprit or corpse in the tube?

I'm not sure how big cigar bugs are, but re-inspecting the tin there is the possibility one could escape through the hinge mechanism .... though why it might want to when there's a ready food supply in the tin?

Which is a worry, because I can't find a corpse?

Rough idea of the date the tin is from?

It was bought last year, so most likely 2014 as it's a retail tin.
