  • Aged cigars

Was at a BBQ so tools a few sticks to or to the flame. A Monte 4, Epi 2, Party Short and HdM Petit Robusto.

A friend pulled out a Monte 2 towards the end from his supply, he estimated that they were ~7 years old. Lovely looking wrapper and he'd looked after them well.

The difference in taste between this stick and what I'd had earlier in the day was remarkable. The Monte 2 had no harshness to it at all, very smooth, it was very flavourful and they were much easier to discern. Very impressed, up to now didn't appreciate that ageing can do to CCs.

I remember the first aged Cuban I tried and the difference really surprised me as well.

Oh dear, the veil has been lifted from your eyes & now having had this experience smoking cigars less than 3-5yo, will never be the same again. You have 3 options, first try to forget this ever happened, a figment of your imagination, too much excitement in the air. Secondly be prepared to pay alot for an occasional treat by buying a single or two from the more reputable dealers for birthdays/ Christmases ect. Thirdly buy some coolidors & start laying down a few boxes to age yourself. In theory, this should be the cheapest & most pleasurable root. In practice, it may be fun but it's anything but cheap & how many boxes do you need? How many of your fav's should you try to age? Who much money do you want/ can afford - to tie up in your hobby? Good luck & welcome to the Dark side of Havana's

I'm gonna try and start the 10 year ageing process myself soon.

I've never knowingly had an aged Cuban though I've got a few boxes I'm hoping to be able to let sit. . Paid a premium for a box of aged Opus X which I'm yet to try too.

My plan is to build up some stock to age by buying 2 boxes at a time. Of course, this plan will take several years to start to come good. Other aid to this is to buy boxes which have a few years on them though of course doing that on something like 25 x D4s would be quite difficult without paying a premium. Reckon it's something that will happen naturally over a number of years as the collection grows.

Could not have put it more perfectly myself and I doubt many others could.

You're an addict if you need to smoke them not if you're tempted to

Put them on the bottom rack, they may be harder to reach then.

If the humi comes with a key ask the wife to hide it.

A good tip that I picked up from the Great, late, Don TJ Coro was to take a few puros out of each box purchased (or even singles from smaller acquisitions), label them up and put them to bed for as long as you like. It saves worrying about whether one can afford to put whole boxes to sleep and it's surprising how quick an inventory can build up.

Why, in TJ's massive unit, there must have been about five boxes of sleepers of various brands and vitolas. I haven't subscribed myself yet, but when I get time, I think I'll root through my cigars and do it. A nice little project
