  • Cohiba or No Cohiba? - For a newbie

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and relatively new to the cigar world. I've had a few cigars over the past month and liked them, so I purchased a humidor and I want to add a few cigars to start a collection to smoke. I'm thinking of getting: Hoyo Epi 2, RASS, Bolivar Royal Corona and another cigar; however I can't decide what the last one of the 4 cigars should be, just wondering if anyone could help me out? I'm stuck between having 2x Oliva Serie V Belicoso (as I've had one and loved it to bits) or having just 1 Cohiba Behike 52 or a Cohiba Robusto?
I've read every review there is on the net (including here) and I've watched every review on YouTube (don't know if Karl Pearson is on here but great views man!) but I can't decide. Is it worth spending that extra for the Behike? I'm just in the middle of my A-level exams so I plan on smoking one of the 4 as a celebration after completing all my exams.
Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks guys!
    Cheers,
    Matt.

Personally only buy the robusto if your going to let it sit for a couple of years because they need some age before they shine. I honestly think alot of the poor opinion of cohibas come from being smoked too young.

The BHK52 smokes good young but is very different from the other cohiba smokes

I would go with the Oliva personally.

I'd say defo go with a Behike 52.
They don't need any ageing, and if I had only tried one at the start of my cigar venture I wouldn't have wasted so much money on others… Robusto will ideally need a little age behind to have potential. I'd say buy a BHK52 from any UK recommended retailer. Just to note, as a newb I too bought a Oliva belicosso, but it smoked really harsh. I probably should've slowed down on it, but I've never bought another.

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum and if I was you and your looking to add a Cuban fourth cigar, for a newish smoker I would recommend an El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme if you haven't tried one already.

Hi and welcome to the forum, Matt!

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but if you're just getting 4 cigars for the moment, I most likely wouldn't go for a Cohiba even though, unlike others, I very much enjoy the brand.

With the price of a Cohiba Robusto you can get two very food cigars, and with the price of the BHK 52 perhaps even three. Considering you're starting off, that's what I'd do, in order to expand my cigar horizons a bit further. Some recommendations would be a Juan Lopez No. 2, a MC No. 4, a RyJ Mille Fleur or even a Upmann Mag 50 (supposedly not a newbie cigar judging by the vitola, but I've loved it since I restarted smoking cigars). A Partagas D4 is also a nice choice, although IMO perhaps a bit too strong for when you're starting out.

Thanks for your help guys, really appreciate it I'm at that crossroads of wanting to spend the money on a Cohiba as I've almost finished 3 years worth of A-levels and want to celebrate it etc., but at the same time I don't want to jump into Cohiba's too soon and be put off something that is potentially a great brand of cigar. Plus it is basically ?30 from C.Gars so I'm sorta reluctant to spend the money, being a poor student and all
But if it's worth it then I don't mind spending it once in a while, particularly if it's a good smoke from young as Sligub and Simon said.

The only way you're gonna find out if you like any cigar - is to try it. Doesn't matter how much people rant or rave about diff cigars, your taste buds are unique.

I am with the wait & see before going to Cohiba's, if you're just doing 'A's they'll be plenty more occasions to celebrate coming up, learn to enjoy the regular Cuban brands & then keep Cohiba & RE/RE/s for special occasions & you're likely to keep smoking. Just fall in love with the most expensive & you'll struggle to keep funding it.

Yep, definitely agree with Simon on that. I smoked a lot of other cigars before I thought a Cohiba justified the cost

Yeah maybe you're right Simon B, I suppose if I fall in love with the Cohiba Behike's straight away then they'll only be one way to go and that's up in price, haha, then suppose you're talking Cohiba Sublimes and 1966 LE's... deary me, I think my wallet would just shut up shop at ?150 a stick or whatever the Sublimes are running at these days, haha

                      Hi Matt
In my opinion I realy think you should have a few different brands to start, so your not smoking the same brand 7 days a week so to speak
Then having decided the brands you like you need to decide what guage of cigar you prefer no point smoking say a behike or a CoRo
if you haven't got the time to smoke such a ring guage so keep a few smaller gauged cigars too such as say a 42 ring guage
that way you have the cigars that fit your mood and time.

                        Matt.

Matt don't go by the reviews like simon G said you need to try them yourself to see if you like them
I've seen most of karls video's and every cigar he's reviewed are all the same
look at them again and see if I'm right in what I'm saying.

Every cigar he smokes it's got cocoa..spice..leather..earthy.. chocolate..
Even my son got annoyed with his video's and don't bother watching them anymore.

Hi Tony, yeah good point, I suppose I need to try a few different brands first, but then again that's why I've gone for a Hoyo, RASS and a Boli, I've tried to mix it up a bit. Though I didn't think about ring gauge, that's a very fair point, the time/mood is a factor I suppose.
I've currently got a D4 and RyJ No. 3 sitting in my humi so once I've smoked these next 4 I'll have a better idea which brands I like. Maybe I'll go for something with a smaller gauge as well then. The question is what... Haha this seems to be a never ending cycle
                          Cheers

All good advice there Matt, you definitely can't beat personal experience and as I've been finding out recently variety is the only way to find a favourite. I was always a Cohiba fan and smoked them pretty much exclusively for a long time and I can tell you, for me, there are plenty of equally as good smokes out there. You just have to find which ones suit you best.
