Partagas 898 Varnished v Unvarnished

So after receiving my unvarnished 898 from 00 I thought a comparison should be in order with my pre 03 898 varnished and my 2013 898 varnished
Here are some photos was surprised how much smaller the unvarnished ones are

Thank you! Just yesterday I was looking at these cigars, and wondering what the differences would be. I know the unvarnished boxes have quite a demand now, and I'll be very curious to learn how both sticks perform. Please do keep us in the loop!

Also, I take this opportunity to ask you gents a question: I've read on several sites that the varnish on the wooden boxes helps to age the cigars better. Is this accurate and, if so, is there any logic behind this?

Interesting regarding the varnish ageing better, it would definitely create a better deal over the wood itself, however there are loads of schools of thought on the ageing process. Some say slight aeration occasionally is the way, others say that a full seal is the best? I don't know really what is or isn't.

Bottom line is it would limit the transfer of gasses and moisture through the wood itself and possibly along edges that are not the main opening.

They are not even close to being the same cigars ... 898v are a bold strong very flavourful cigar ... The 898uv are less strength less bold of flavours yet way more complex ( lots of green tea and cinnamon ) .

given the choix ... I would take 898v until 20 years of age after 20 no question that the 898uv is a better cigar .
