  • Looking for advice on where to start.

I've recently taken delivery of my first Humidor and am going to start seasoning it in the next day or two.
I have started looking a little more into the cigars available, but it is absolutely mind boggling the amount
that are out there. So, I am after a little advice on where to start.
I don't necessarily mean recommendations on individual cigars, although please feel free to do that, but
I need help on where I should start my selection process.
Should I start by selecting length, ring gauge, strength etc?
Is there a sensible approach recommended to this or simply dive in?

    Thank you.

    John.

Don't buy anything that's too long for your humidor! Buy a few singles until you get an idea what you like is the best advice. Our tastes are all different and they all taste different to each of us.

I'd try a few singles petite Coronas and coronas or petit robustos from various makers so you get an idea of taste and strength and take it from there , but I find cigars are a bit like eating chillies seem really strong at first but as you train your pallett your threshold and appreciation will develop

Start with a selection of cigars from different brands. All have different flavour profiles and will give you an idea of what each brand tastes like. As Oskihen said, most do a petit corona or something very similar, I'd start there.

My advice would be like peejay said not too long, go for petite coronas mild to medium in strength
then deppending how you get on try the thicker ring guage say 46 and so on
try not to run before you can walk.

            Cheers chaps. Appreciate the advice.
I am currently spending hours trawling through reviews.
I am enjoying myself, but I am looking forward to smoking one or two to get started.

Good advice on the smaller smokes also if you are smoking out side in this weather smaller smokes are the way to go as the cold could soon make smoking less enjoyable

When I started I bought some of the sampler packs from the sponsor then went on to buying from a specialist BandM, buying as may as I could in the same vitola to compare tastes

Thank you for all your advice so far.
After doing some reading of reviews over the last few days I have come up with a shortlist
of what I think sounds like a good place to start. They are listed in what I think is my preferred
                  order:

                  Romeo Y Julieta Wide Churchill
                  Montecristo No.4
                  Cohiba Siglo I

In your opinion, do you think I am in the right sort of area?

Good advice to sample the smaller vitola across brands. Get a general feel for flavours & profiles. I'd highly recommend to smoke and experience them indoors if poss through this cold weather. Ideally room temperature. I've found Cubans don't taste the same or as good in cold conditions. Bare in mind too that longer or thicker cigars will take longer to smoke, ie an hour minimum. And try not to rush smoking em. Ensure you have sufficient undisturbed time to enjoy your smokes & overall experience.
And maybe take note of what you do and don't enjoy, almost like a diary if you wish. ATB.

I think you're on the right track. Slow and steady. I like the top two

Trinidad Reyes is something I would respectuflly suggest you put on your list.

As every Reyes every time. Perfect starter smoke in my book. That and the Monte 4 but Pune already got that [emoji4]

I'd also recommend a sampler with different brands and sizes so you can get a good variety to help you decide what you like

Yes sampler of different sizes to find the size you prefer just now (it will change more than once) and then grad a handful of different brands at that size
