  • Uk Winter, its toll on our Cubans and what to do.

There is a budget thread running, but I've started this as an assist to anyone like myself who does their smoking outside.

Wind is just a nuisance, cold isn't a killer, but cold plus high humidity are. It isn't Winter yet, but today here in Southend the humidity is 96%, that's 31% higher than the humidity of my humidors. Experience has taught me NOT to attempt to smoke large or expensive cigars in damp air. The act of smoking pulls in the moisture causing the cigar to choke, become marred and plug or worse to swell and burst. In simple terms Winter damps will waste your good cigars .... and because nobody really wants to be out in the cold longer than they need to be, the tendency will be to smoke your cigars a little quicker than you otherwise might, which in itself isn't conducive to really enjoying a smoke.

So what to do. a) check the BBC weather for your postcode before taking a Behike into the garden, and if you can afford it, buy an outdoor hygrometer. b) choose your cigars. If you want to smoke, don't waste anything valuable.

The budget thread is helpful, although I would say some of the smokes on it are too big. Perlas is about as big as I would chance during Winter. Short fillers I find tend to be less problematical than long. Ignore 'aficionado' snobbery, I'd rather smoke 5 Guan Compay (they really aren't that bad) for ?7 per pack than chance wasting one Bolivar PC. Think of it this way, smoke cheaper cigars during the Winter and you deny yourself nothing, in fact the reverse is true because you'll have added another 4-5 months to your quality stuff by the time Spring comes around.

    Consider:
Partagas Chico. Quintero Puritos. PL Panatelas. Any Cuban Demi Tasse. RG Cigarritos and Perlas. Upmann CJ and Belvederes. Any Cuban Minuto. Boli Tubos No 3. Partagas CJ. Arturo Fuente Cubanitos. Indian Tabak Ten Little Indians. Davidoff Primeros (Dom: white tin, Nic: black tin).

    A caution.
Double Perfectos perform dreadfully in UK Winter. As lovely as the Cuaba Divinos is .... leave those until after April.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

The VegaFina Perlas would fit that bill nicely at a good price too.

        Love your thinking Arf
        Got plenty of small smokes
Think you could add to that
        RG Panatelas Extras
        Quintero Panatelas
All ready for my winter with the above two 2 boxes of each
Plus 2 of the PL Panatelas
And what with the chicos and the puritos on order [emoji1][emoji1]
Forgot also I have a cab of the RG Cigaritto and a couple of boxes of the RJ Belverdere

Can add these too John, handy little tube .... and probably ideal for younger BOTL out and about or queuing for taxis and such late at night in the cold and mists .... and a good little smoke for the money.

Not that I ever queue for taxis or go out late but it certainly looks like a nice 'slip in a pocket' sort of smoke

No, no weather worries for the squareheaded in Mexico TJ .... though the odd farting burro or rampaging bandito could spoil the reverie of your Co-Ros!

I will be adding a few more "short smoke" boxes in the next few weeks. Hopefully some Panatelas sizes like the Rafael Gonzalez Extras and the Por Larranaga.

I think the H. Upmann Half Corona could work, but they can be expensive for such a small stick, but they are very tasty.

Will be interesting when the Partagas D6 comes out, if the cigar can offer us another angle.... but they may take again, over 30 mins to smoke, and whether they are a "budget" smoke, is debatable.

An absolutely fantastic post Mr.Tippexx. I was not something I really considered although as with you, I smoke outside.

Price is not my first concern, quality of what I am smoking is. If you had to chose 3 boxes, which would they be?

My palette is becoming nice and broad so can appreciate a mild or light smoke vs. a typical Bolivar. I am swaying more to the deeper smokes including Maduro's.

A 3 box suggestion would be most appreciated and also thank you for the heads upon the R&J Cedros Deluxe No.3 Sept 07. They are a stunning smoke. Look forward to posting through a little thank you when I have the privileges to PM.

                            Cheers,

Fixed Winter choices are difficult because every day can be different. I wouldn't recommend anyone smoke anything larger than a Perlas outside in UK damp. Everyone should have some 20min standbys and the 2 puritos fill the slot really well and a x25 box of each should set you back about €44.

In regular boxes I would suggest, but only because I like them.
