  • Factory Codes

    Hi

I am just checking whether there is anyway to check what the factory codes for a box of cigars would have been if you know what date they were rolled? I bought the singles listed below a few weeks ago and although I made a note of the age I forgot to make a note of the factory codes. I asked at the shop again today but they couldn't tell me as they move stock around so often

I know its difficult to work out but I thought that if I knew the vitola and the date rolled it might be possible to also find the factory code as they may all be the same for that month, for example all RASS rolled in December 2010 may all have the factory code ABC - hopefully that makes sense?!

    Anyway, the cigars are:

    Trinidad Reyes (November 2010)
    Montecristo No 5 (April 2005)
Montecristo Petit No 2 (August 2013)
    Partagas Shorts (September 2012)

Although them changing all the time and with which code represents which factory being a big secret means that recording them is almost pointless, if they do ever come out it would be good to know where my cigars were rolled 😊

    I'm a bit obsessive I know!

Thanks Mo - that wasn't quite what I meant - sorry I wasn't very clear

Basically I want to know if its possible to work out what the factory code is based on the date of the box and vitola because every box of that cigar made in that month will have the same code

These days most cigars can be rolled anywhere so it is almost imposable to retrospectively identify box codes from marca/vitola/dates.

The box codes and the factory they represent change regularly.

Keeping a list of what/when/where is a highly guarded secret amongst some high-end collectors. Many only want to buy Cohibas rolled in El Laguito etc.

No-one has ever published a full list (AFAIK).

NB - Even the box code does not guarantee it was rolled in that factory ...only boxed. For instance all Behikes have an El Laguito box code but this is just because they are all 'boxed' there ...not all rolled there.

Thanks a lot - that's really helpful - I didn't know that the factory code didn't necessarily mean the cigar was rolled there

As mentioned in the original I know it is basically a pointless exercise and would be difficult but just wondered whether in principle if you had two Monte No. 5s from the same month but different boxes would the box codes be the same - it more for my own interest to be honest and I'd just be interest in keeping a record

I do sometimes wonder why they bother putting them on at all - if they want to be so secretive about it why not just put the box date?

Another thing to remember is the cigars are graded by colour before being boxed so my understanding is that a box most likely will have cigars in it from more than one roller....

The sorting tables have literally hundreds of sticks laid out by colour.... Quite a sight to see

That is something I would love to see... I think I will need to try to convince my wife that another trip to Cuba is necessary!
