I think one should remember the huge challenges of being a citizen of communist Cuba before making comments about their quality of life based on smoking at work.

I see what your saying Monkey, but I don't think anybody meant anything beyond a flippant response.


With the greatest respect, on communist Cuba: The have a healthcare system that a large portion of the world would be envious of.
The Citizens have one of the highest life expectancies in the world and since the fall of the Batista dictatorship in 1958 when less than half of all people in Cuba were offered any kind of education, the education system in Cuba has the highest enrolment figures for any country in Latin America.


I do not mean to belittle the issues present in the country as I'm sure there are many, and perhaps I speak beyond my station having never been to Cuba and witnessed the day to day lives of the inhabitants.


However I can speak of first hand experience of extreme poverty, and it is often in poverty where the people most determined to rinse every last drop of joy from their lives exist. It's something that inhabitants of more fortunate nations could do well to take a lesson from.


Perhaps the people of Cuba don't experience the most enriched existence, but education and the hope of a long and healthy life is more that the inhabitants of certain other nations will ever be able to dream of.

now now V, let's not get this out of hand going too politically social or socially political.

let's just say: i've met people (cubans i may add) who see Cuba as a place with extreme poverty with insufficient needs for survival. Then i've met people who see the population as joyous people who live really happily by just leaving their house and seeing a blue sky: the sheer simplicity makes them joyed.
it's a different world they live in and we with our outside perspective will only have less of an insight that anyone else does in the Cuban state.

No no, not my intention to escalate into some kind of social/political observational rant. It was meant in the spirit of light hearted discussion and if it came across otherwise then I misrepresented myself.
But yes perhaps not the correct place for such a discussion.
