Ok, not done a review online before so here goes!
I recently had my first Choix Supreme and, given the nice weather, I opted for a mild pimms with it to try to avoid having a stronger drink which might have masked some of the flavours of the cigar. This is also one if the cigars that I was going to try out to see if I wanted to smoke it at my wedding next summer.
Initial impressions:
The cigar appeared well constructed, the wrapper had a slight sheen to it and it had a pleasant, cedar and slightly spicy nose before lighting. Upon lighting the ash was initially a very nice bright white.
First third:
The initial taste was harsher than I expected, and the cigar initially did not burn evenly at all. The draw was also fairly tight. After about a centimetre, the flavour mellowed into an earthy base taste with occasional notes of strong coffee (as opposed to strong notes of coffee) and toasted oats. The draw also loosened considerably about halfway through the first third.
Second third:
The draw remained nice and loose and the burn improved in even-ness, but only really towards the end of the second third. The flavour remained dense, earthy and the hints of strong coffee and toasted oats increased in frequency.
Last third:
The draw remained the same, the flavour remained the same until towards the nub where it became hot and fairly harsh. The notes of coffee and oats became less frequent throughout this third.
Overall impression:
Not an unpleasant cigar, but not what I was expecting from a robusto - I thought the flavours would develop and change a few times through the smoke (eg. the Hoyo Petit Robusto) but they were largely the same throughout. I don't think I'll be smoking this at my wedding but I certainly wouldn't complain if I had to try another one at some point in the future. With hindsight, my drink pairing was wrong as this cigar is stronger than I anticipated - a Martell VSOP or XO might go fairly well with it.
