  • Beware Of The Mold..

I just got heads up, that there has been an increase in moldy cigars coming out of Cuba, so when buying inspect them thoroughly...

Cool, well not but thanks. I take it it was from a reliable source and assume it's a current production issue?

It will be prudent to keep good communications/enquiries with suppliers and vendors pre-purchasing then chaps.

Interesting. How do you end up with a situation like this? I'm assuming they aren't being boxed mouldy....

There has been a lot more boxes being opened and inspected from main distributors recently as mold has been an issue, this includes recent boxes from 6-12 months old. I witnessed this yesterday, only i could not take pictures if you get what i'm saying...

I had a box of Bolivar Britanicas delivered today, and it had been opened. I had wondered why.

All cuban cigars bought in the UK should be opened as H&f inspect every box. If your getting unopened boxes in the UK they are either grey market or fakes.

Hmm thanks for the heads up. I'm not talking from great experience. The box that arrived this morning was my second ever box. The first was from a very reputable source. I can't 100% be sure if it was opened but I thought I had broken the seals.

In 10 years I don't think I have ever received a sealed box. I have seen sealed fakes though.

A bit of mould can happen from time to time but normally no big deal. Sometimes it is just unavoidable.

It is worth considering that many European countries consider a bit of mould normal, and will often present sticks with mould on in a retail environment without any concerns.

I've only got the one sealed box of HURRs but that was by choice from Stagnettos. Loren offered me the chance to view them but I wanted the novelty of opening them myself!

Mould spores occur everywhere on the planet so I can't imagine Cuba has any more problems with it than anywhere else.

Temperature and humidity are factors in the growth of mould. ALL of the main distributors would have facilities for proper control and regulation. The only thing I can think of that might encourage mold in new boxes is that something has gone not quite to plan at the freezing process?
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!
