  • How cold would you go

    Hi chaps,

The thermostat on one of my wine coolers has gone on the blink causing it to cool the temperature to approx. 52F rather than the usual and stable 65F.

I've heard of lower temperatures being used for long term and wondered what the general consensus was about storage/ ageing at lower temperatures. I understand that (apparently) slows the ageing process.

    Cheers, MB

As I recall the Cubans store their new productions in -10c for a few weeks to kill the potential tobacco mites. So 52F seem's quite reasonable to me until such time as you can resolve the thermostat probs.

I remember a year(ish) ago European Cigar Cult Journal did a very indepth scientific article about humidity and temperature affects on storage and ageing, they may have it in their online library now. I'll try and hunt through my issues to see when it was published.

*edit* Found it, Winter Edition 2011, four pages starting at page 57, titled "Active or Passive", goes into a lot of detail and measurements of humidity effects, not so much about temperature,.
