  • Returning cigars from duty free

My girlfriend bought me some HdM double coronas back from geneva today and once I had opened the box I found a few that were a bit crappy quality.

The wrapper on some were cracked and flaky looking and the bottom row were stuck to the bottom of the box by too much gum on the bands.

The bands on most of the bottom row are really badly placed.

We're do I stand with this? Any way of returning them or do I have to deal with it?

What a shitter, sorry to hear this. I'd do a bit of homework, track down a contact number and give them a tinkle to see what their response is. You never know...

If your girlfriend has the original receipt and can show personal importation ie. proof of travel & importation (duty free) the HMRC will look sympathetically on DF replacements. That said, she will need to speak to HMRC, as I recall they will try everything to put her off . But will eventually direct her to the correct paper form & procedure. I did this some years ago, but also had to show proof of returned damaged sticks to USA.

I eventually got replacements, but then had one hell of a battle with Royal Mail ( as agent / collector of duty ) had to copy RM every document before they eventually released FOC package.

      Good luck

Nice haul. I especially like the label work on dem sticks!

I'd return 'em and ask for some genuine puros in return.

Wounded. You just wouldn't check either. How they passed QC is beyond me?

They probably got damaged in the shop, i.e. after QC.

Yeah let us know how you get on, I've always wondered how you return goods to the airport shops...

I'm gutted because I've only got 15 good ones now.

My girlfriend feels bad because she didn't check them but they were all sealed up I don't think she could have checked them. I'm going to email the shop today and see where I get.

I could find a contact for hmrc concerning returning goods bought from duty free abroad

Could always buy some repairer fluid/glue, I'm not sure they're unsmokeable

Some of them have broken the wrapper and binder. The ones with the bad band are good to smoke but for a cuban you want them perfect. Maybe I'm just picky haha

Not sure how they've managed to get pleats in the band's....is that contraction?

I once had a split and badly flaky SLR Churchill which turned out to be an amazing smoke

....so give 'em go...you never know!

I go along with Deano on this. The badly applied bands aren't nice, but from what I see none of the smokes look so bad as to be un-repairable. I know it sucks, but I'd repair the ten and smoke them up as quickly as I could ... probably a lot easier and less painful than dealing with HMRC.
If you want to, you can.

I gave a few ideas, to get them smoking under the New in the Humidor topic...check it out, it may help...
If there is a whole cigar that's unsmokeable, get hold of some cigar glue and then repair them all at once using that stick as the donor...when cutting the wrapper cut into angled strips so it will disperse more evenly along the cigar which will also prevent burn issues later on, hope this helps...
