  • What would you buy in Geneva

In 3 weeks time one of my colleagues is going to Geneva for a 3 day meeting.
He can legally import 200 cigars with no extra duty or other taxes involved.
What Cubans would you have him buy? For smoking now, and ageing maybe 50 or so.

Well..as none of this involves UK tax laws I'd suggest looking at http://www.gestocigars.ch they have good prices & a wide selection of aged & premium cigars...& a nice shop...
Mods can scrub this if I'm out of order.....

I would shop around, well away from the airport, to see what was on offer. If anything was available, I would buy the biggest and best Cohibas available until I filled my quotas. The problem will be finding bargains in Geneva - of all places ! Not really known as a bargain basement - more a rich man's rip-off joint.

Really? Is this from personal experience of cigar shopping in Geneva?

My view, for what it is worth, was quite the opposite when it came to finding good prices on cigars. Gesto's being the equivalent of a booze cruise across the channel but for smokes!

I've heard they have some great stuff tucked away in the humis. It will be worth making contact with then before you go if you are looking for something in particular.

David, but you couldn't be more wrong.

Some excellent bargains to be had.. not too mention some 'hard to find' aged stock.
As Puff has already mentioned, Gesto's is probably you're best starting point.

Robusto, petit edmundos, Ramon allones as, two boxes that's fifty cigars that retail smoke nice enough out the box, the next hundred and fifty worlds your oyster. I like to mix up my vitolas but I'm a sucker for robusto size

But your friend is going to Geneva not Abu Dhabi or Andorra .... if it were me I would consider myself fortunate he wasn't going to London, Berlin, Rome ..... or Zurich (That's really Swiss expensive). Also, how much leisure time will he actually have, and does he have the cigars knowledge to go whizzing around Geneva B&Ms looking for piecemeal bargains. Personally I would contact and talk to Gesto, what's shown on their website isn't the total of their stock, sort out what you want, pay for it and arrange for your friend either to collect it or have it delivered to his hotel.

I'd be interested to know the difference in price between Geneva and the UK once tax is taken into account. My last visit (about 15 months) ago cost me dearly when I got back to Heathrow so my 'personal experience' wasn't great. With a maximum duty free allowance of 50 cigars (into the UK) and all the time in the world to shop I suppose I could have done better. If Gabon has a 200 limit thenthe savings are going to be greater - with time to shop.

That is exactly what i am going to do, thanks for the link Puff, certainly some considerable savings to made, and it's legal, so no fear of confiscation.

I think it fair to say the pre-tax purchase price of a cigar is less in Switzerland than in the UK and that the levels of Duty and Tax are less too.

If it cost you on arriving back at Heathrow it would only have done so if you exceeded the allowance. People often forget Switzerland, though bang in the centre of Europe, is not in the EU.

If you want to, you can.

You're right, of course. Had I had more time to shop around I would have bought bigger but fewer. As it was, I bought what I could find in the limited time which, naturally, took me over the limit. I always envied those who had time to browse - that's clearly where the gains are made.
