  • Some bewildering Cuban jar maths

Was looking at prices, and with nothing better to do ran a little comparison, not on cigars but on the cost of the ceramic jars which they come in.

    CGars UK.
Cost of single stick Partagas SP1 = ?18.99

    Therefore 25 x Partagas SP1 = ?474.75

    25 x Partagas SP1 in ceramic jar = ?469.00

Therefore value of jar is minus ?5.75

    my smoking shop UK
Cost of single stick Partagas SP1 = ?18.65

    Therefore 25 x Partagas SP1 = ?466.25

    25 x Partagas SP1 in ceramic jar = ?439.75

Therefore value of jar is minus ?26.50

I wonder if either Mitch or Simon would give me the jar plus cash if I phoned and asked for the empty once they'd finished using it as a picking jar?

    CGars UK.
Cost of single stick Short Churchill = ?13.49

    Therefore 25 x Short Churchill = ?337.25

    25 x Short Churchills in ceramic jar = ?399.25

    Therefore app. cost of jar is ?399.25 less ?339.25 = ?62.00 (?75.75)

Not allowed to name source Germany
Cost of single stick Short Churchill = ?9.80

    Therefore 25 x Short Churchill = ?245.00

    25 x Short Churchills in ceramic jar = ?261.90

    Therefore app. cost of jar is ?261.90 less ?245.00 = ?16.90 (?14.22)

    UK to Germany difference = ?47.78 (?56.79)

Now I accept that the UK has higher taxation and Duty on tobacco products than Germany .... but on ceramic jars too?

In fairness to Mitch LCdH Hamburg are pretty much on par with the ?'s prices above, so I guess the difference is some sort of added H&F tax on UK BOTL for the privilege of being allowed into UK shops .... or maybe they just don't like RyJ!

A very apt subject for me as I have been resisting the urge to buy a jar of P1.

I read that the P1s were only available in the jar. I then saw P1 singles for sale at the above price and put it down to them getting a premium price for that reason.

I'll wait and see what the P1s are like once I receive one from Deano

My advice would be don't buy at UK retail..set up a network of travelers/holiday makers/friends & do your buying overseas...
I'm with you most of the way on this one, Scotty. However, folk like Mitch need to provide for salaries for his 5 pretty girls on the Forum banner and, of course, the lifestyle to which he intends to become accustomed ! Add to that their location and the on-costs of that - subsidised season tickets, luncheon vouchers (do I sound dated ?) and the like. That all comes from profit - it's part of the commercial equation ! If you extend that philosophy to a firm like J J Fox or Davidoff, imagine the overheads of operating in St. James's or Mayfair ! I never begrudge a fair profit but I suppose the real question is - how far beyond 'fair' do these guys operate ?

It would have been nice had Habanos supplied the vendors with a box option on the SP1s. Neither Simon or Mitch are obliged to use jars as picking boxes, they could just hold out (like some others) for the fully filled jar price.

Still, Deano got his in Cuba and was smart to do so!

After starting my new job a few months back, i've been astonished at how using wonga loans is "the norm" for a lot of the guys there.

Mainly early 20s guys with incredibly good salaries, topping up on cash at the end of each month. Someone even sent an email round last month reminding everyone to pay off their pay day loans to avoid extra fees.

I asked one of them how much interest they end up paying if they pay before the end of the month. It was something like 50 quid on a 200 quid loan. The worst bit is sometimes they get paid early from work and would only have to wait a couple of days!

Donk - If it's just the jar you want, they do appear - empty - on ebay from time to time. Worth keeping an eye on Collecting - Tobacciana & Smoking - Cuban cigars which is generally where you'll find them.

These characters have always been around - The Pawnbrokers Act allows extortionate rates of interest plus document fees for what are usually no more than short-term loans. The only difference is that you need to deposit something of value with them - your Rolex, your Leica camera or your whistle & flute.
