  • Cigars in America

Just been looking at cigar websites in the states (reviews not to buy) and they always seem to have Cubans but I thought they were illegal in America?

The review sites say you can buy them from a certain website so I had a look and they do have montecristo, cohiba etc but when I click on them they say they're from the Dominican Republic.

Is this just a way to get round the fact they can't have Cubans?

Montecristo say they're made by altadis

    It's a common question.

The brand names have all been used in the US to sell various NC cigars (I guess because Cuba can't enforce any kind of copyright in the US). They have absolutely nothing to do with the Cuban versions ...apart from the same name.

That makes sence then. I was wondering why I had never heard of some of the cigars people were reviewing

In some cases the "original" copyright owner I.e fled before the revolution and have since sold the name to the big American company's. In others e.g. Cohiba its as monkey says

they have the same names as Cuban cigars but are not sold as Cuban, the original owners of the name left the island before the revolution as monkey said, they are not to be confused with the fake cigars ie Cohibas in a glass top box sold as genuine Cuban cigars in DR

Not strictly true monks, a lot of the 'American' manufacturers claim to have Cuban cigar connections through exiles to the States & claim also, to use Cuban seed tobacco in their products...

            I've recently been given a couple of Romeo & Julietta 1875 Reserve's 7 X 52/54...they look & smell the dog's doodackers, but I've yet to smoke them...

Was wondering the same thing when I was reading reviews. So basically they have cuban brands but actually arent cuban tobacco?

Yup, wouldn't dispute that. I guess for me 'Cuban seed' means nothing as it does not (to my taste buds) make the sticks taste any more Cuban.

I bought some RyJ robustos from a supermarket in Florida last year and they were very close in taste to the Cuban ones. In fact, of the 30+ different NCs I tried whilst there, the RyJ NCs were the only ones I would buy again.

Did they taste Cuban and like the Cuban r and j blend (more than can be said for a lot of the Cuban r and j's these days).

No doubt, the so-called Cuban seed promoted is from many generations ago.

Regardless, it's all about the soil.

                              Yeah, my bad. Smileys added.

Though it's hard to do from an iPhone with Tappa talk.
