I'm not surprised by this in the slightest.
I worked out the same for fuel... ?50 of BP get's me further than ?50 of Tesco or Asda, despite the BP (or Shell) being a smaller volume of fuel, owing to the higher cost per litre - thus the cost per mile is quite a lot smaller with BP, so I will happily pay more for a tank (doubtless the better petrol is better for my engine as well). Usefully, there is another factor, called 'smiles-per-mile'. The better fuel takes me further and means my car produces an extra few BHP (only meant to have 110bhp), meaning I can have more fun when the mood (and the road) takes me.
Worked out the same with food long again. Spend more, get less, feel just as full - so always buy the better quality food.
