Talking point. Conversation killer you mean in some circles Dave. Collectors would pay a pretty penny though no doubt.

I think we had a thread a few years back. Some hitherto undiscovered supply depot was unearthed in Germany. Amongst other things it was stacked with boxes of German made cigars carrying the Wehrmacht eagle and swastika stamp.

Your's looks like a Diplomatic gift cigar. A bit of a wasted effort really as old Adolf didn't smoke!
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

How did you come by them Puff? They are definitely interesting from a historical point of view, but Tippexx is right - it would make me very uncomfortable if someone started showing me their Nazi memorabilia!

This shows an interesting point. People detest Hitler and all things about that period in German politics, Detest his acts yes, but he was a great (but very misguided leader) he managed to come from nowhere and rally a country to act in a way that no-one would have normally done.

I find these a very interesting view of the social history of that era. If they had Churchill's face on them and Germany had won the war (if there can ever be a winner in war) then the discussion may have been the same.

It is a bit like Anders Brevik, I went to a forensic psyche lecture the outcome was that he was a racist xenophobe but not insane. People would love him to be insane so he is "nothing like us", but not the case.

I don't understand how anyone can think that National socialism is a legitimate political perspective. It was, from the very beginning, intrinsically a racist ideology that demanded total obedience to a leader and the elimination of political opponents and groups that were deemed to be 'racially inferior'. And the systematic killing of 11 million people (not to mention the many millions who died in combat) was an inevitable outcome of the demand for absolute conformity and for the suppression of difference. The holocaust and National Socialism are inseparable. I for one would leave any country that tried to implement National Socialism or any other far-right ideology, because political oppression and a police state are always the outcome.

I think that depends on how you interpret National Socialism of which I deliberately wrote in English longform to disassociate from Nazism which I cited for it's extremes. If you can only associate National Socialism's myriad of views & political philosophies with Hitlers atrocities then I don't think this is the place to discuss it....

With the best will in the world I don't think a plain text forum will ever be a good place to discuss such emotive subjects. I would strongly advise we don't.

IMHO These sort of discussions can only be had amongst people you know, face to face, where the subtle nuances that can make all the difference between perception of balanced intellectual political hypothesising and extremism.

Seriously, this conversation can not have a good outcome on a forum ...one for round the table with a nice cigar

I don't really understand your distinction between 'National Socialism' and 'Nazism' (after all, the term 'Nazi' is just an abbreviation of 'National Socialist'), but maybe its based on nuances that aren't easy to explain in plain text format without writing an essay. I accept that you didn't intend to defend Nazi atrocities. I agree with you and Monkey that we probably shouldn't discuss this kind of subject online as it is a very difficult and sensitive topic. I would, however, urge you to think carefully before posting something like 'National Socialism is a legitimate political standpoint' as this could easily be construed as inflammatory and offensive, even though I'm sure it wasn't meant to be. I'm happy to drop the subject now and go back to talking about cigars!
