On the other hand, I don't think that this justifies CC snobbery - surely it's an advantage to have sticks that smoke well straight away?!
I was only suggesting it justifies my snobbery ...not in general ...and then still half-joking. I have had 5-10 Padrons (including family reserves. 1964's etc) and not really enjoyed any of them beyond 'it was ok' but none of them had 5 years on them ...perhaps this will prove significant.

On a mission to convert me by one of by good NC afficianado buddies I have recently been given a big Tat Churchill that apparently is the dog's watsits from 2007 (and rare as hens teeth). I am thinking of tasting blind with a couple of other churchills and see what happens.

As for smoking well young you are absolutely correct but so far I have no found a NC that really rocks my world (I have tried many). Again only my personal experience, many others have a different opinion.

Next week I may get to smoke Fox's new Padron. This is made from 10 year or older tobacco and is a premium stick by anyone's standards. I am trying hard to smoke with an open mind and (if I go) I will report back how it smokes.

Yup spot on. Even the Cubans didn't know for years what the fuss was about with aged sticks.

I have only had new Cohibas (i was also 'new' at the time too), and found them to be so-so. Having found that the general consensus is that they are known more than most brands of cigars to get better with age, i decided to age a few.

I have a Siglo I with almost nine months on it, two Robustos both with around eight months on them, and a Behike 52 with only about a month on it.

I always have a special cigar on my birthday. For my 23rd this Saturday, I'll be having a year old RA Gigantes. Perhaps i will have the Behike 52 for my 24th.

Probably not Monk, because until recently no one has felt a need or has seriously bothered. But they are starting to now. Seemingly some of the stronger blends do improve with age (not all), and this is in some way effected by the wrapper. NC wrappers are notoriously thin. It's the ones with the thicker wrappers which appear to age better. (Don't ask me which NCs have the thickest wrappers .... 'cos I don't know!).

To follow up on what monkey and Tipp said about NCs, I have smoked NCs for many, many years and have found only a few that seem to improve with age, regardless of the thickness of the wrapper. Perhaps a few of the old Indian Tabac, but I can't think of any others.

There are however, some very good to great and NCs.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but how about a little list TJ... your Top 5 of the very good (and available U.K.) would be a good starting point for my "research" into NC's...
should I wear a baseball cap or sombrero to get the proper effect...

I think a Freddy Mercury moustache is the best thing to wear Dave! :-)

I smoke a fair few NC's (about a third of the cigars I smoke are NC's) so here is a list of the ones I like best, which are all available in the UK. In my opinion they are all very good to great cigars:

                Padron Anniversary 1926 and 1964
                Arturo Fuente Short Story
                Oliva Serie V
                Rocky Patel Vintage 1990

There are other NC's that make good 'everyday' smokes and some that I've heard good things about but haven't tried, but so far these have been my favourites.
If you want a midget to look like a baby, don't put a cigar in his mouth.

I wished I had responded to se?or Puff-n-Stuffs request before he left for the other side in a giant puff of puro smoke, but chico's list above covers some of my favorite NCs and a few runner ups.

So for the late, great se?or puff - off the top of me head and in no particular order, my top NCs are:

                        A. Fuente God of Fire Carlito (95 and 96)
                        A. Fuente Opus X and Anejo (from the early years...haven't smoked any lately)
Davidoff 100th Anniversary Robusto 100 and Diademas Finas (Limited release in 06, I believe, so they may be hard to get today).
Padron Anniversary 1926 series and 80 years

Other nice NCs I like are the A Fuente Hemingway series and Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 and 1992 when they were introduced over ten years ago. (I have a few in crystals that are dreamy.)

There are probably others that will come to mind later, but these are some of my favorite NCs off the top of me head.

I hope they have a good supply of these wherever you are, se?or puff.

Don't worry JT, if Puff's in heaven amongst the clouds of smoke, there will obviously only be Havanas there anyway
