  • Yes, more fakes from Cuba...

I had a pretty exciting morning. A co-workers brother-in-law brought back cigars from Cuba and was interested in selling them. I asked if I could see them as I was interested. The cigars were purchased from a cousin of the guys cuban wife that works in the factory. He said the cigars came from the factory. The same old story....

Yes, it turns out they were fake.

    First box:

Cohiba Pir?mides....From the outside: Were in a brown wooden box. The Habanos band and Cuban Tax/Customs sticker looked legit. BUT no date stamp on bottom of box, no Edicion Limitada band in corner of box under the Habanos band, La Habana, Cuba on wrong side of front.

On inside of box: This was the kicker. Edicion Limitada band on cigars said 2011 but cigars were Pir?mides format not the Cohiba 1966 Ca?onazo Especial format. They didn't smell right and the craftmanship of the torcedor was not good at all. They were ugly cigars.

    Second box:

The next box was RyJ. They box looked legit, the Habanos band and Cuban Tax/Customs sticker looked legit. HOWEVER, again no date stamp on bottom of the box, and nothing on the side of the box telling me what vitola it was. I had to open the box to see what format it was.

On the inside: Turns out it was a Churchill. The cigars were a much better quality than the Cohibas I looked at earlier. But they didn't smell right either. The band(S) looked legit. It had the red RyJ band and the gold band saying "Romeo y Julieta Churchills". However, of all the searching I did online I could not find this combination of bands on one cigar. I found a red RyJ band and also gold band saying only "Churchill" on the same cigar. And I found a only a gold band saying "Romeo y Julieta Churchills" on a cigar. Even though the cigars themselves looked good the other inconsistencies made my spider senses tingle.

I didn't buy either of the boxes and told him they were fakes. I took pictures but can't load them right now. I have to wait till I get home. I will post the photos later.

For those that will make the trip to Cuba, (if you haven't seen these already) I hope this helps you know what's out there.

Even though I missed out on a chance for some great cigars, it was time well spent looking at and touching real fakes. I've read a lot about fakes but never actually saw some with my own eyes. It was a pretty cool experience.

    Cheers!

Post Edit: I'm back home and posted the pictures below.....

Yeah when I was I Cuba they were never done trying to sell you fakes. Even in the resorts they try it on. They always just appear not quite right somehow, go with you gut instinct. Also if they don't provide a recipt then don't buy as the customs can and will confiscate them without proof of purchase.

real fakes meaning they were not imagined, not a picture of one, but genuine able to touch with your hands real fakes. Poor choice of words I guess. Is kinda funny though

Sorry for the poor quality of photos, but I only had my cell phone camera... Here are the photos as promised:

            Cohiba:

            RyJ:

Kurt as weve' seen before and i'm very grateful for this post, the photos are good enough to detect fake smokes . My opinion is they must sell so many fakes to ignorant tourists and the like that they hardly bother to perfect these poor replicas.
I think many of us have knowingly sampled fakes and the very best are fair smokes but still detectable in other ways.
Also when you know theyre' fakes they will never taste quite right ?

Well,I'm gonna be honest and hold my hand up and say that, based on the photos,I'd have probably been had!! I mean I'd like.to think that I'd have seen something wrong if I was faced with them but who knows???

One more thing to watch out for with Cohiba boxes such as Esplendisos: they come in a cardboard outer box and the date stamp and warranty seal is attached to that, not on the varnished box itself (at least not on any I've ever owned)

I would agree by looking at these that they are convincing, however I believe that when investing in cigars go to a reputable source.

those look purdy good. but why take a chance with customs when you know that they will confiscate without a receipt? besides if you can buy them legally why go through the hassel?

Kilowhiskey, this post has been invaluable. As a newbie to the world of cigars this is the kind of info I need. As mentioned in a previous thread, a mate of mine got "burned" and I was about to hand some money over to. Keep up the good work guys. Forewarned is forearmed.

I'm constantly amazed at how folks continue to buy obvious fakes. Are we just greedy?
                          If
                          -The price is stupidly low.
-the seller is not only not a legal cigar retailer but has no idea about the product.
-the packaging looks like it was made from plywood covered with old newspapers
-the cigar bands were printed on a copier
-the cigars are not only not colour-matched but the wrappers look like shite.
-we have all read endless warnings on forums such as this excellent ULCF about buying doubtful cigars.

then you should know better but...

Met a young Argentinian in Cuba recently. He asked to join me on the terazza as I was the only other person smoking a cigar.
He was smoking a fauxhiba robusto. The cigar looked terrible and the burning end was an exploded mess of charred tobacco bits.
He told me that he thought it was likely a fake but that he had bought a box from his shuttle driver because he had always wanted to smoke a CoRo. I suggested that it was pretty obvious by the way his counterfeit was burning and his lack of enjoyment. I gave him a Monte Especial to clense his palate. When his abandoned fauxhiba was cool, I did an autopsy to show him what was in the cigar that he had just wasted money on. Nothing but bits and stems.
Now this guy was a cigar smoker and said he KNEW he was probably buying fakes but did anyway.
No idea why folks think they might actually get authentic cigars from a bus driver in Cuba.
The lad later bought a REAL Cohiba Robusto from the nearby Casa del Habano so at least he got to enjoy one.
I like to think he didn't take the fakes home to hand out to friends but I'm too much of a cynic.

Excellent to get pics etc of fakes other than cohiba, I reckon most people would by now be dubious about the cohiba, glass tops etc etc but the RyJ I reckon would slip thru people's net alot more often
                              Thanks
