Thank you Chaps- just one more thought and I am not being rude when I say this but I actually am questioning whether there is confusion about the smell of amonia in a recent production box being confused for a bouquet that may well be correct for the cigars and if anyone would like to send me their recent production box of Havanas that they suspect smells of amonia I would be very happy to check and advise and return overnight at my cost
Best
Mitchell

NAW.
No offense intended but I have to call BS on these observations, especially with recent stock.
I'm with Mitch on this issue.
I certainly don't have his experience with handling and smoking thousands of Cuban cigars but I've been buying, ageing and smoking them for almost 50 years and I've experienced a broad range of "problems" with the Cuban product. The only issues that I've seen that didn't resolve themselves after a couple of years in the box, were from some poorly constructed stocks from the mid-late 1990s.
I won't repeat all of Mitch's comments but please re-read them as a guide. It's the real poop!
Now, let's see... if I WANTED to try to get cigars to start fermenting after they were rolled... NAW!Commander Bob

A couple of examples of some bloke who pretends to know a bit about cigars of ammonia in new sticks.
Tasted the Montecristo Gran Reserva Cosecha 2005 (tobacco bale 2005) with one of our members in the lounge Steve Insley, who was delighted when i asked him i...

The Regalios de Londres that I tasted the next day at Ajay's was choca with ammonia.
Now there is no doubt there are many sticks that don't suffer but there are some that certainly do.
But to be clear we are talking about 'fresh of the boat' sticks. Not sick periods that will happen during the ageing process.
NB - If I remember right Pete Johnston claimed that properly matured leaves will never have ammonia ....not sure I agree with this and is a whole other debate.
..and full circle, no mention of ammonia

All In Good Time!
Originally posted by Lionhound View PostMany cigars, as you say, do go through a sick period, and these are ones from the same batch/vintage. Almost without exception they come through this with time, but my fear is that a statement like this may come back to bite. I've smoked for long enough to be able to accept these nuances and if I detect a problem, don't go running back to my supplier to complain, just leave them for a while then revisit later.
This is where vendors of non-cuban cigars have a leg-up on their Cuban counterparts. I have never purchased a non-Cuban cigar that required additional aging to be enjoyed immediately. Most are properly aged before going to market - or so I've read. I have, however, purchased boxes of puros without knowing the box date beforehand because the vendor refused to provide this information. Unfortunately, the puros were only a few months old (based on box date) when I received them and required several months of aging before they could be enjoyed. Needless to say, I no longer use this vendor.
But as senor Lionheart indicated, no need to go running back to the vendor if your puros are simply too young to smoke. Give them some rest and see what happens. And Next Time, ask for the box date before you buy!
Well, that's what I think anyway...

Interesting....but I (ahem) agree senor Kman.
I have several "young puros" resting in my unit as I type that are still showing signs of a so-called 2nd fermentation!!!.
But what the hell do I know!!!

Myself and Simon are splitting a box.... Which finally arrived today (thank you snail mail) after an excruciating wait!
Upon opening... What a smell and what a sight! Perfect is the word that springs to mind. Going to let them acclimatise overnight and smoke one tomorrow :-).

I bought two singles and now wish I'd bought more so that I could try one now and then again later.
I'll be really upset if I try one of my two and it is fantastic as I'll only have one left....
S'pose I should buy some more really.
Too many cigars for cash I have available, GRRRRrrrrrrrrrrr.
