Is it just me or does anyone else get soapy notes from certain cigars?

Recently I have tasted (strong) soap from Punch Punch and DCs (both quite young), a little from a Por Larranaga PC and now (as I type) a Monte No. 4 (constant soap for the first inch).

    Thoughts?

Yes yes yes.... At last someone else with the same tast buds as myself and SSteve. Don't know how wish someone would explain why other than do you keep your cigars in a soap box.... Stupid people!!

Yes. Once or twice this year now. And one was a review smoke. No idea what causes it though .... although residual insecticide might be a possible explanation.

If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Can't say i've tasted it but lol it doesn't leave you with a good feeling if they're covered in chemicals.

I have found a few mentions of it on other forums. Theories vary from soap on the smokers hands to soap on the hands of the rollers/packers to residue within the box itself. There are other mentions of age playing a role too. I know it's not down to any fault of mine - unless it is of course a faulty palate. I might separate a few of the guilty sticks from their box and then compare them vs the boxed ones after a year.

some pipe tobaccos are renowned for it. I think its the lakeland blends. I had it once and binned the rest of the bag. It almost seems to be a trait deliberately blended in to some pipe blends. So if you look in to pipe toby it may give you answers.

It is a known, fairly rare occurrence. Not sure we have ever had a definitive answer as to why. I have never experienced it.

As Harpo says, we have experienced this a few times, mainly (I say Mainly not always) it's with darker wrapper and a stronger blend of Cigar...The RyJ EL Robusto was one I remember very well.
Perhaps its just the Cigar developing through it's various changes in its maturation and the natural chemicals being release.
I dont believe its anything to do with the Rollers

Personally I would not have thought it was rollers etc either. Whatever it is is very much part of the leaf - either naturally or unnaturally. The No.4 I had last night was pure soap for the first inch, after which it mellowed a lot and became more of a coffee/leather/chocolate. So the soap is present in the same fashion as all the other flavors - it just isn't desirable. Like I said to Kdot the other day - I'm working on the assumption that the soap will mellow to become something more acceptable to the palate Perhaps another palate would detect the soapy stage as something else...

This was one of the most stupid and misinformed "theory" that I've read on cigar forums, specially at a time when soap (and amenities in general) was so rare in Cuba?

Any ideas to what causes it Frank?

I have experianced this soap taste twice this year. Both sticks are from boxes dated 2011. I put it down to age. I know its a little early to call but the 2011 sticks ive had so far have nearly all fallen short. Could 2011 be a bad year, Cuba getting lazy after the 3 previous great years?
