  • Does anybody like Jose L Piedra?

    Good evening all,

I've been reading reviews on various websites about Jose L Piedra, I'm a student so I can't really afford to spend ?300 - ?400 on a box of 25's such as Cohiba's etc but I'm going to save my money until I visit Gibraltar in October or December (unsure of university dates) but I'd rather save my money and have a nice spending spree in Gib.

So, this brings me to the "cheaper" Cubans such as Jose L Piedra. I've read a lot of negative reviews about these cigars but I was wondering what your opinions are of them and Guantanamera too? I know these are around the ?120 - ?130 mark for 25, to be honest I've got a few decent Cubans in my humi but I'd like to put 25 cigars in there to last me through until my trip to Gib. I just want to know, are these two brands really that bad?

I'd love to hear your opinions and even any other "cheap" suggestions.

    Thanks for reading!

    Rick.

Thanks for the reply, I've been to Gib a few times before but I wasn't a smoker back then.

I think the best of the cheapies are the Quintero Panatelas, no pretentions just pure cuban flavour with sweet ceder and a bit of spice

x2 on not bothering with the Guantanameras

But deending on your budget, for a pound more you could get Monte #4 or Por Larranaga Petit Coronas

I've been meaning to try a Monte #5 or #4, I've never tried a PL PC, what sort of flavours are associated with one?

I'm heading into town tomorrow, I'm hoping to buy a H.U Conny 1 and perhaps a Monte and some more Boli's too. If anybody has recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

+1 on this. I've only ever smoked 4 JLPs and didnt enjoy a single one.

Monte 4 are chocolatey, bit of cream. But the quality control is not always great, just luck of the draw. #5 are normally a lot better construction wise (at least in my experience) and are similar in flavour but have a bit of a citrus twang.

PLPC are delicious, sweet and toasty and if you get some that have a few years on them then waves of caramel

Partagas shorts are a great cheap stick too, always consistant and hit the mark everytime.

The Boli corona Jnr and petit corona are great showcases for the marka

The H.U Mag 46 are fantastic smokes, just tons of milk chocolate.

I love the R&J short churchill too, sweet, black cherry and woody; like freshly cut blackthorn.

I've decided what I'm going to buy tomorrow. I like Puritos (perfect to take to uni and they're bigger than cigarillos), I'm going to get a few packs of the Monte Puritos, a Mag 46 (been meaning to get one for ages), maybe a Connie 11 and a few more Boli JC's. I know Dave recommended the Boli RC but when I get some funds, I'll buy a few sticks.

If I see one in the shop, I'll buy a JLP too since they're only ?4 on the site.

If you like the smaller size for handiness I would recommend trying El Rey Del Mundo Demi Tasse. Very tasty little sticks.

I've never had an El Rey, but have been interested in them. Think I'll pick up a few this weekend based on this recommendation.

This "caramel" thing is just a myth, some kind of cigar board legend. Before Min Ron Nee wrote about this caramel taste in his Encyclopaedia, NO ONE ever mentioned it on any forum. Suddenly in 2004 people that have never smoked an aged PLPC started to parrot this caramel story…
At best, aged PLPCs can deliver strong flavors of wild honey (no the cheap white supermarket honey), along with notes of flowers, nuts, toasts, spices…
They're delicious, but it takes them ages to get to this point…

I am a huge fan of the PLPC. It's one of my "go to" sticks. I have always thought that they smoke like a much bigger cigar and give a long finish with depth that I tend to associate with larger more expensive cigars. As for the JLP's... I usually have se in the humi for when I don't want to overthink a cigar. It's my grass cutting cigar!?!?! They suit a purpose. Duty free they are ony about 40 pound for a 25 bundle. I also keep them for friends that come over and want a cigar but don't usually smoke!
It aint where ya from, its where ya at!
