Geneva Airport Duty Free

Geneva always comes up as a great place to go and buy cigars...

I was supposed to be heading off snowboarding but the Missus' knee isn't up to it after an op last year and my mates that are going are laying it on thick!

To cushion the blow, I've asked if they might use their allowance for me! Anyone got the inside track on what Geneva airport Duty Free is like for picking up some cigars? Are the prices roughly the same as I'm seeing for the down-town stores?

The airport has a rather swish walk-in humidor...one of my favorites I've seen on my travels. Best place to go though is Gesto in the city itself. Fantastic range of very nice sticks at very good prices. If I recall they were the cheapest I could find in Geneva....well worth a visit.

There was talk of people doing Geneva and back in a day on this forums a while back, did anyone do it?

I have looked into it and return flights on the same day seem a bit awkward.

Been looking at doing the same... I found easyjet flights to/from Luton mid-week for ?50 return, out at 06:30 and returning at 18:00. The train into town is easy & cheap and always on time and the station is inside the airport building! Simples...

If you do it before the end of March there are stacks of flight options while the ski season is in full swing.

The allowance back from Switzerland is only 50 cigars per person isn't it?

My mates won't be able to get into town as they will be in transfer buses from the ski resorts. Cool, at least I know they have a decent Humi in the airport so will get an order in...

Yep 50 is the limit I think. I just know I would end up trying to sneak a few extras in.....

The one thing I would say is that the last time I went through Zurich airport, the prices weren't really comparable with those that were available from the swiss online retailers

By what sort of margin are we talking about? Did you pick anything up yourself out of Zurich that I can try to compare current prices against?

Moidoid that is perfect, exactly what I'd previously been unable to find via google!

GVA DF does seem to be a bit more expensive than the usual online Swiss retailers but it's still a significant saving on UK prices.

Hmmmm actually... those airport DF prices aren't quite as good as they first seem!

Difference of 2 quid a stick on something like Siglo II's compared to the Swiss online prices.

I was in Zurich so-called 'duty free' last year and the prices were not far off UK retail! Biggest airport rip-off I have seen. Geneva may be different though?

I got a box of Partagas LE Especiales for ?100 there - ?180 here.
Also the Party jar was ?260? from memory, which was reasonable at the time I seem to recall.
Obviously you need to check around before you buy.

Compared to UK prices, Geneva Duty Free is cheap, but it is still expensive compared to one well-known shop situated in an appartment in central Geneva. It takes 5 minutes on the train to get into town, and this wonderful haven of cigars is about a 15 minute walk from the station. PM me for further details if you have time to get away from the airport.
