  • Day Trippin

Hi all, looking at the possibility of a day trip somewhere to stock up on cigars that don't cost the earth. By the time I've bought 5/6 sticks from the UK, that's almost enough for a return flight to somewhere in Europe. I know some have done a trip to Geneva (would really appreciate a write up of that if possible), and some have posted about holiday destinations. I'm interested to see where would be good to go given a few factors

    Cost of flight
Distance needed to travel to find a decent selection (is a car/transport needed)
    Prices

So Spain for example, a flight to Malaga airport, would you need to look at car/scooter hire and subsequent cost, or could you find something local to the airport?

Also, being a day trip (and a noob), I'm unlikely to know a great smoke that's available for a decent price even if it was staring me in the face, so being able to buy a few singles to try out (sitting at a local cafe?) before buying in bulk.

Bit of a tall ask I guess, but if anyone has any insight I'd be very interested in your thoughts

Interested to see the responses to this. Sounds likes a great idea.

I'd be interested in that advice too.

Unlikely to find the perfect scenario, but hopefully there will be enough info to patch something together.

I have a mate in Calahonda, so could potentially stay a night with him, and he might even be able to taxi me around for the promise of a good smoke or a bottle of his favourite rum 😂

The only restricting factor would be the allowance to bring back, although if the cost works out low enough it could be an enjoyable trip to do a few times a year

Geneva is definitely one of the easiest cities to get to. Geneva is only a 5-minute train ride from the airport. There are five or six shops that are worth the visit. Gesto and Rhein Tabac were very well stocked a few weeks ago. Geneva is a fairly compact city so you can visit all the shops within two or three hours. I don't know about the flight times from where you live but you could probably do everything in a day

There is also now a new shop called ‘The Cigar Market’ in the Geneva Airport Train Station terminal.. which is where I made my first purchase!

Mind if Steve's been there, it's likely barren.

In all seriousness, you will be able to go to Gesto and pick up 100 cigars within 5 minutes

I had planned to go to Hamburg for the day to visit Hacico but found one of the two brands I wanted had reached Spain so picked them up in Majorca. If anyone's interested I wanted Capitol and Skel Ton and found the former in three tabacs. If you're considering Malaga some of the guys have had good pickings in Fuengirola.

I've heard a lot about Gesto. Are prices there good? Possibly looking at a holiday around October time.

So a friend of mine in Spain says to use an app called Bolt (kinda like Uber?) to get around if you don't want to hire a car. Seems it's about €30 to get from the airport to Fuegirola. I'm sure getting the train would be an option but not looked into that.

I've driven those coastal roads and that's stressful enough 😂
